examples of counterculture and subculture in the US.

There are various examples of counterculture and subculture in the US. A typical example of subculture is LGBT. It refers to a community that is active in most LGBT events. The events include pride parades and awareness campaigns that reach out to trans-gendered or gay individuals. One can be heterosexual but still, be a member of this subculture and support their ideas. An example of counterculture is suffragette. It was a women’s organization that was founded in 1903 and engaged in civil disobedience and direct action.

The LGBT qualifies to be subculture and not counterculture because the community has its norms, values, and beliefs but generally exists and operates within the mainstream culture. Their social structures and political views are not outspoken, which is an attribute associated with the counterculture. On the other hand, suffragette qualifies to be counterculture and different from the subculture. It is because it is an organization whose reaction was against the culture that was in place and swung its pendulum in a directly opposite direction. The term counter culture even has the political implication of working against the mainstream system or culture to cause societal change.

LGBT is different from the mainstream because it is a community that fights for the rights of people with a different sexual orientation comprising of transgender, bisexual, lesbian and gay individuals. The community mostly advocates for same-sex marriages which is not the standard culture regarding marriages. It is because marriage partners are supposed to be of the opposite sex. Suffragette is different from the mainstream because it is an organization that fights for women interests only. Its main symbol is womanhood, particularly in terms of leadership. The women in the organization have goals of voting for female leaders in all significant positions. It differs from the mainstream culture because the mainstream culture believes in equal opportunity for both sexes.
