Introduction

Across the 21st Century, the service design industry that incorporates creative and professional designers and creators such as video effects designers, graphics, fashion, moving image, interior, and digital designers have been on a consistent upsurge. This has inspired a redefined research tendency in the design industry. Exhibition spaces are not only display platforms but also a channel to diffuse culture, science, and knowledge. They have been instrumental in the improvement of the design industry through inspiration and absorption of new design methods and ideas. In an exhibition event, the space functions as a channel for participants to interact with designs and experience ingenuity and human civilization. As highlighted by Moon et al. (11), exhibition spaces are visual carriers that enable the professional and creative design industries to diffuse content to members of the public. They, therefore, have a profound role in creating a service value that is beneficial to users.

The professional and creative design process is solely based on the customer’s requests and views. This forces the exhibitions to use a human-oriented principle that incorporates user involvement in order to develop the content and design patterns. A profession like architecture or fashion design requires an approach that puts a priority on the values of the users through user involvement and research. This helps in understanding user thoughts and incorporate their perspective in the development. Exhibition space is therefore fundamental in professional and creative design as it provides a trans-informational channel that is centered on the needs of both the exhibition event, exhibitors, and visitors. These actors collectively form the “user” of an exhibition service. When planning for an exhibition, these groups remain key in the development of a “user-centered” exhibition experience.

General Research

Humanity across the world has evolved into a redefined age that is characterized by high-tech and information that influences an individual’s conception consciousness. Throughout history, technology has consequently been framed through the apparent relationship with popular culture. The use of technological artificial intelligent solutions and related technological artifacts in the modern era is influenced by culture. The use of AI technology in the modern era has become a popular symbol of simplicity, autonomy, and humanization of technology through reasoning capabilities. The science behind artificial intelligence has become a fundamental driver of artificial intelligence and assimilation of logic reasoning into machines. Spearheaded by researchers such as Alan Turing, the futuristic inspiration on computing machine intelligence has since become popular culture. The post-humanistic perspective is evident in modern science fiction and conceptualization of the future in movies and books where astronauts are shown having conversations with intelligent computers and self-aware robots. The fantasy and futuristic approach to the modern life where human-like technology is increasingly significant in society.

Target Audience

The target audience of the exhibition stand is an expansive range of a group of users who assess the appearance of an exhibition booth and makes a decision to visit the booth. The target audience is the individuals whom the professional and creative designers want to reach. The design of an exhibition stand can tell a tale that attracts the attention of a random uninterested individual and trigger curiosity. This curiosity will move them to approach the booth and engage with exhibitors. In order to attract a wide range of visitors, the booth incorporates an aesthetics characterization that is aimed at attracting a relevant audience. With exhibition show attendees largely considerate of booth design and resources that both offer visual preferences. These factors compound into an adventurous experience which is a significant consideration for attendees when deciding whether to approach a booth.

The Constraints and Opportunities of the brief

This design concept offers an opportunity for the improvement of user experience in a design exhibition through the exploitation of technology as well as accessibility. There is a research gap on the effects of design in exhibitions and trade fares for individual professionals as well as businesses in the design industry. As highlighted by Bloch et al. (13), there is a need for systematic research on this domain as there are promising observations. The key agenda is the issue of surface decorations of exhibition booths and the possible effects on visitor’s behaviors. Excessive decoration of exhibition surfaces is one of the questions that come up in the design conceptualization due to the risk of overstimulation. This may lead to an inverse effect due to overstimulation. Due to the limited information about cultural characteristics, incorporating a culturally considerate design concept remains to be a challenge. This area is still underdeveloped in marketing research and evaluation of visitor behavior across the world. Information on cultural characteristics can be valuable when creating exhibition booth design for different cultures. For instance, observations by Moon et al. (15), assert that attendees from Europe are less likely to be attracted by open and curved designs as they are known to be agenda-driven compared to U.S attendees.

The Proposal

The “Creative Skills of the Future 2020″ exhibition event seeks to bring together professional and creative designers including architects, video effects creators, fashion, digital and graphic designers as well as interior designers. The purpose of this document is to report on a design concept of an exhibition stand that will offer visitors a fine educational experience. The design elements used in the concept include environmental psychology elements and atmospherics that are not only relevant but also accessible. The exhibition stand design is based on behavioral choices and intentions of the exhibition which are influenced by factors such as attendee characteristics and auxiliary activities offered after the event. The planned agenda-related behavioral factors include all the functions of the booth which is to offer visitors a platform of interacting with products. There are also non-agenda behaviors that are usually not planned for. The colors, shapes and surface decorations of the booth compound the booth design concept

The exhibition stand features a complex system that incorporates a wide range of factors including the space size requirements, layout, and content of the exhibition. The stand is a service-oriented and user-centered station within an exhibition hall of about 2,560 square meters and forty exhibition stands. The hall is equipped with several amenities including restrooms, electricity, and water.  The exhibition hall makes use of an open route structure, a product exhibition area and a display for the exhibition content. The proposed stand is a 64 square meter stand with a single floor that offers enough space for visitors to access the exhibitions.

The exhibition stand design features a display that is focused on offering visitors a platform to interact with design ideas by paying attention to the psychological senses such as touch, visual, taste, auditory and visual. The use of multiple emotional and thought channels are aimed at improving the user experience, effect, and service satisfaction through sensory stimulation. A multimedia technological device that makes use of auditory and visual senses is used to give different visitors from various demographics such as age and cultural backgrounds and experience of the exhibitions. Various forms of multimedia such as 3D animation, audio, video, pictures, and modern technologies that incorporate virtual and augmented reality are combined in display content.

The interior of the exhibition stand will feature cool and warm orange and gray color tones and a bright pastel-pink wall which will allow maximum light and create soft shadows. The pastel and gray color tones are also recommended for individuals with hearing disabilities. The plan and floor arrangement utilizes maximum space and make use of large openings to allow as much natural light as possible.

The Plan (Aerial view of each floor)

The floor plan features a concealed design of the exhibition hall and the booth

3D Visual (axonometric or isometric)

The 3D visualization features an AutoCAD design concept of the booth from four camera angles. The 3D model used is designed from shape extrusion and supplemented by a free 3D model of a human in a wheelchair. The booth is equipped with a display for sharing content with attendees.

Conclusion

Exhibition designs have for the past been considered to be artistic and less scientific and solely relying on the creativity of designers. While creativity is crucial in the conceptualization of ideas, science remains to be a key factor in the development of both aesthetic and usable design concepts. The design of an exhibition stand.
