Factors Influencing Leadership Styles In workplace Situations
Different leadership styles are used in most working environments. Most leaders usually have a dominant style of leadership. However, a good leader should change their leadership style depending on the occurring situations in the workplace. Changing leadership to rhyme with the workplace situation can improve the results of the company. The main factors influencing the choice of leadership styles are task, environment, individual, team, and the leader’s preferences.
Different tasks may require the leader to apply different leadership skills (Pawirosumarto, Sarjana & Gunawan, 2017). For example, if a task is to be achieved in a certain deadline, the leader may be required to use a more autocratic style. Team also determines the leadership styles to be used because all teams have a unique dynamic. The individual roles played in the team determine the productivity of a team.
Team functionality can influence how a leader rules. Having a bad team dynamic, the leader may experience some difficulties in leading them, making some team members inactive and lazy. Individuals are structured to work and respond to situations differently. Therefore, a leader should learn the type of individuals he is dealing with and evaluate how they will cope with his leadership style (Pawirosumarto, Sarjana & Gunawan, 2017). Both the internal and external environments surrounding a workplace can determine the leadership styles to be used. The culture of the organization also determines the leadership style to be used by the leader. The personality traits of a leader can also determine the leadership style to be used by the leader.
In conclusion, leadership styles play an important role in facilitating performance in the workplace. A good leader should identify various factors influencing his leadership style and alter his dominant style to fit the preferred leadership style for workplace situation.
