Managers are given the responsibility of motivating employees to improve their productivity and overall organizational performance. A good manager should possess excellent leadership capabilities and practical communication skills. There are various strategies I would apply as a manager can use to improve my leadership capabilities, enhance employee motivation, and communicate effectively.

Motivation

As a manager,  I would employ different strategies to improve employee motivation.  One effective strategy is making the work environment friendly and pleasant. The workspace should be clean,  well-organized, and nice looking. The working equipment should be in perfect shape and updated. A conducive working environment enhances interest in the job and improves employee productivity. Additionally, I would be respectful, supportive, and honest with my employees. Employees are more loyal to managers with such traits and are motivated to execute their tasks properly.

Recognizing and awarding employees for work or personal accomplishments is an additional strategy that effectively improves employee motivation. Acknowledgment from management means a lot to employees and pushes them to work harder. I would design an incentive program to offer rewards for exemplary performance in assigned duties. As a manager, it is also important to provide employees with meaningful feedback about their job. Positive feedback gives employees satisfaction, while constructive feedback points out areas where improvement is needed. Besides, I would be transparent with employees on the state and performance of the firm. This makes them feel valued and a key part of the organization. Employees have a deeper connection to the business and feel obliged to ensure it performs well.

Setting measurable, realistic, specific, attainable, and timely goals for the business and individuals provides employees with purpose in their daily tasks.  As the manager, I would inform employees what is required of them and explain how the tasks they execute contribute to the business’s success. Additionally, encouraging teamwork and creativity within the firm plays a vital role in enhancing employee motivation. Creating space for employees to handle the issues they come across fosters problem-solving and learning within the firm. This improves employee motivation because they know that they are valued and trusted by the management.

Leadership

There are various leadership skills I would make use of to enhance effectiveness in managing my employees. Being honest with employees is one key strategy. When employees lack trust in their leader, they lose satisfaction in their jobs and become dishonest well. Trustworthy managers are effective leaders and foster honesty within the company. I would also work on maintaining excellent communication skills.  A proficient manager should be able to communicate efficiently with his employees verbally and in writing. As a manager, I would adequately articulate my views, goals, expectations, company’s vision, mission, and so forth to the employees and ensure that they work towards a common objective.

As the manager of a department, it is crucial to be decisive. A great leader should make difficult decisions without hesitation after conducting due diligence and evaluating all possible options. Decisive managers are effective leaders and ensure that business operations are efficient. Additionally, I would have confidence in the decisions I make. Confidence is a vital leadership trait because it enables a manager to maintain the support of his employees. Employees trust the choices a confident manager makes and are willing to follow his lead. Furthermore, great managers are flexible and capable of modifying their management style to accommodate their employees’ different needs.

I would be creative as a manager and lead from the front in generating solutions to challenges. Creativity improves company operations, as well as employee and customer satisfaction. Collaboration and teamwork are vital in enhancing organizational performance. As the manager, I would foster cooperation by encouraging team building, designing shared goals, and rewarding partnership. Managers who are active leaders have learned to delegate various tasks to their employees. I would delegate minor tasks to my capable subordinates and focus on completing the urgent and complex ones. Delegation of functions shows that a manager has trust in the capabilities of his employees.

Communication

There are various strategies that I would use as a manager to effectively communicate my views, the company’s mission, vision, provide feedback, and so on. It is essential to articulate the company’s goals, vision, and purpose to employees frequently and consistently. Storytelling is a hugely powerful approach for communicating the goals and mission of the firm.  A well-developed story helps employees understand the vision or mission correctly, enhances trust, and creates an emotional attachment to the vision, goals, or mission. As the manager, it is vital to lead by example and behave consistently with the vision and goals set. Employees will follow suit and model their actions towards the achievement of set targets.

For communication to be effective, it should make use of multiple channels. Advancements in technology have resulted in the development of faster and convenient means of communication. It is necessary to incorporate diverse communication channels such as notice boards, group presentations, team meetings, social media, blogs, and so forth when passing information within the company. It is also essential to frequently repeat the core messages through diverse channels to the employees. This enhances familiarity with the information and fosters commitment because the message is etched in memory.

As a manager, it is vital to seek feedback from employees. Feedback enables a manager to determine whether the message has been interpreted as intended and to identify information that should be reinforced. Effective communication of a company’s goals, vision, and mission also involves mapping out a path that will lead to the company from the current state to the desired position. Visual aids, metaphors, and multiple media forms can aid in reinforcing messages and keeping them vivid.
