“Momento,” directed by Christopher Nolan, is a thriller that distributes with such goings-on as a linear structure or dependable narrator and rather gives us a main character that suffers from disabling short term loss of memory. Nolan employs a unique style when it comes to film directing, and this makes most of his films reverberate with the majority of the moviegoers. He differentiates many clues to appear like a vital cinematic instrument. Perceived as postmodern and auteur film-maker, Nolan is factional to elliptical editing, natural settings, hand-held camera work, documentary-lighting style, and actual film spots over studio work (Nolan, 2007). His directing technique makes this film an interesting and memorable one.
The mise-en-scène in Memento is the standard of the movie noir genre. The utilization of the props, costumes, colors, lighting, and the set at large have a robust film noir foundation. The flashback shots and the chronological shots utilize black and white lighting style. The film’s production design creates an exciting world and progresses the plot through style and portrayal of the characters.
Editing is necessary for the film since it foes backward, in a basic narrative plot; the last scene would be its beginning. However, the editors succeeded in altering the time and it rearward. The cutting’s rhythm is at an average pace, and it is not too slow or too fast. Although the editing was a basic one and entailed jump cuts, the editing of flashback shots was very powerful.
In “Momento,” the cinematographer did quite good work, and the pattern starts in color and is going rearward. The reversing of the scene symbolizes going back in time, as though it were reversing the moving from the ending. The scene starts as the image fades, and this is tracked back into the camera. This symbolizes Leonard’s memory issues, whereby he cannot recall anything that happened recently. Thus, the image fades as it is the case with Leonard’s cognitive ability. This is noteworthy in developing a peaceful scene before apprehensions develop later.
