Gainesville Agricultural Program
Project background
As societies work toward creating a food sustainable world, urban farming practices are revolutionizing itself, especially in schools where learning is boosted. On the other hand, schools create an engagement that created awareness among the students on green issues. The University of Florida gave its students a chance to have a tour at the school’s garden in a bid to help them develop an idea on a project that can be implemented in Gainesville. The primary goal of this project is to prepare learners to create and support the livelihood of the local community. Therefore, the school’s activity serves as the beginning of creating a healthier food system in the country.
The objectives of the program
- To have a locally grown food system that will be served in the school’s cafeteria in a bid to improve student’s health.
- To include a program in the school’s curriculum that is leaned toward urban agriculture.
- To act as an avenue where students can acquire nutrition education, as well as support small scale farmers.
Justification
This proposed agriculture practice in UF will act as a basis to help other schools achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will also support the local food systems by producing high-quality organic vegetables in schools – by lining it to the local markets. Finally, the adoption of the program to the urban market will sustain the present and future generations by feeding the growing population.
Implementation of the Project
The school’s garden will be assessed on the availability of land, water, and secure area for the implementation of the program. Seemingly, the school will advocate for a star-up kit, that will contain the manual o how the seeds would be grown and other necessary information on planting and managing the vegetables. Finally, it is imperative to note that all the vegetables and seeds for the program will be locally provided.
