Gendered roles
Every society where everyone is born is made up of different sets of ideas that govern how both women and men are expected to behave, dress, and appear. In most cases, each gender has what is expected of them. Such expectations are referred to as gender roles or gender expectations. Each society has its gendered expectations, and this means that they differ. The gendered expectations are bound to change as time goes. For instance, in most communities’ women and girls are expected to dress in a feminine manner and also act politely while on the other hand, the male s are expected to be bold, strong, and also aggressive.
While in public in an official pink blouse, Most people stare at me with a surprise. I later realized that pink color was considered masculine in our society—most people in the public wonder why I wear pink blouses instead of blue, which is considered feminine. I honestly don’t follow such expectations since garments are meant for wearing regardless of the color. A pink blouse to me is okay, just like any other color. As long as a blouse is meant for ladies regardless of the color, I still put it on. Such expectations do not change anything if not followed. Wearing a pink cloth does not make you less of a woman.
While in public or anywhere in society, most people expect me to be dressed more than men. My society expects women to wear the sexiest outfits. This gender expectation is supposed to continue until adulthood. Society doesn’t mind the age of the ladies. The fact that I am a college student does not bother them. This burden of sexy dressing falls on all ladies, and this is to ensure that the people in the society always have an object that is pleasant to look at. I remember one time when women competed to wear the sexiest Halloween costumes. In my opinion, wearing clothes that expose you in the name of being sexy is not my taste. I believe that wearing sexy clothing will never make you more of a woman. I only need to dress decently but not to impress those around me.
The society expects that women must be soft-spoken and should not shout since their voice is considered irritating. While at home, school, or anywhere in public, people expect me to keep speaking to them softly even when I get irritated. When participating in class and talking to my colleagues, I am expected not to shout since I am a lady. In my view, being soft-spoken is very crucial, especially when I want people to pay attention to what I tell them. I believe that using a high pitchy voice shows you lack confidence. I even have been thinking of enrolling in a voice class since voice is crucial for communication. As a lady, I find it very important to use a low voice since it earns you respect. A voice spoken from your diaphragm is compelling when it comes to communication. Shouting to those around, you can also increase their fear and make them not understand what you intend to say, such as students in a class. A friendly tone is very crucial when it comes to content delivery.
