Get Out Lab 2
Get Out is a social commentary of the Black racism that is still prevalent in modern-day America. The movie was written in 2015 but was released in 2017 to coincide with the stepping down of Black President Barack Obama. It was, therefore, very unexpected that the people would still be fighting against slavery even after the reign of a black president. The movie consequently illustrates that black racism is still so much engrained in our society that even after the evidence of blacks being able to lead America meticulously, for ten years, it still wouldn’t be enough. Blacks are still seen as lesser beings who should be dominated by the whites.
The movie explains that slavery is still evident in modern-day America, only in a different version. Dean Armitage holds an auction to determine whose brain would be transplanted into Chris’s brain, which was the same thing of how the anti-abolitionist auctioned their slaves then sold them to other masters. On yet another occasion, Jeremy, Rose’s brother sees Chris as more masculine because of his black nature. This stereotype of blacks being seen as more masculine to the other races has cultured the view of them being perceived as more violent and a threat. This why the white police officer asks Chris for his driving credentials on their way to Rose’s home because he sees him as an affinity to crime.
More so, the movie brings to our attention that blacks are still being oppressed through systemic racism. The wealth gap existent between blacks and whites is a clear indication of the limited opportunities that blacks are being given in the development of the economy. The movie aims to give a voice to the systemic form of racism that is always silent and overlooked in the community. The negligence in finding black people when they go missing, and the hypnotization of blacks through their demeaning to always make them feel subordinate to the whites, are some of how blacks are still oppressed today. All of these are happening even after black discrimination was abolished centuries ago.
