Globalization Vs. globalism
Introduction
With the world, today being a global village, and the advancements in technology, it is essential for one to become a global citizen. Global citizen is the awareness, the embracing and the caring of the cultural diversity in the world and at the same time, promoting social sustainability and justice as well as having the responsibility to act. This is the definition given by Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013). Most of the human beings are self-centered in that they only think about themselves and their families and not about the global way of living and thinking about and with others. Individuals tend to forget that their actions have consequences, and these outcomes affect other people both directly or indirectly, and progressively change the world in general. Being a global citizen has its pros and cons. Besides, being a global citizen also advantage one in the achievement of their personal, academic, and professional goals due to advanced technology.
Globalization Vs. globalism
By watching the video, it is clear that globalization takes place across borders. An increase in business and innovative ideas from one country to the next is what the narrator in the video describes as globalization. On the other hand, globalism is described as a world that is attributed by networks of connections and goes round multi-continental distances.
Advantages of Being a Global Citizen in a World of Advanced Technologies
Being a global citizen has its advantages, as outlined in the video provided. Through the advanced technology, the world has become a global village, in that people can reach out with one another regardless of the distance between them; through emails, text messages, and calls. In the present era, technology has proven to be the key to communication as well as a significant source of information. These factors contribute significantly to the achievement of one’s personal, academic, and professional goals.
Most of the information that we have we get from searching through the internet through the use of internet search engines. By searching through the report, we can get people who share similar minds and have knowledge regarding what we need. The data is of benefit to our professional, academic, and personal lives. By using the internet, I can keep an active communication channel with other people, which is suitable for building healthy relationships as well as private and professional development. Also, by looking for information on the internet, I can learn about different cultures, thus being able to interact professionally with my clients. Knowledge of cultural diversity not only helps in the professional field but also in the personal and academic areas. Social media will also help in helping me keep contact with the patients and offer additional services to them through calls, emails, text messages, and social media platforms.
Different theorist on global citizenship
According to Reysen & Katzarska-Miller (2013), the confusion brought about by the definition of global citizenship is aggravated since most of the theorists derive their meaning from diverse disciplines and viewpoints such as those of politics, education and even theology. In this case, one theorist may perceive that global citizenship is defined by various traits, while the other may believe that no characteristics are involved in global citizenship. In my opinion, I would define global citizenship as the ability of individuals to act, think, and performs globally with the perspective of the diverse cultures involved. I would define global citizenship with the quite, treat others as you would want to be treated.
Two important Outcomes of global citizenship
In the article by Reysen and Katzarska-miller, they discuss six outcomes of being a global citizen. However, in my opinion, valuing diversity and intergroup empathy seem to be most important.
Valuing diversity
In the video, Jonathan reports that “For most of history, most people have lived surrounded by people very much like themselves, with the same history, the same values, the same language. And globalization has thrust us into this sudden condition of diversity” (Jakobs & Monfils, 2010). Diversity is inevitable in the world, and for this reason, we are all a bowl of salad, and it is expected for us to mix and taste well as a various globe. In this case, respect is vital for other people, their cultures, norms, and beliefs with no judgment. Respect and understanding other people’s diversity leads to harmony and discourages conflict. A personal illustration that enabled me to take up global citizenship is going to mission in India.
Intergroup Empathy
This is the ability to have a connection and taking care of people in the world, even without a close relation or knowledge of them. Empathy is being in a position to show emotional feelings towards another person’s pain. An excellent example of having intergroup empathy is after the Katrina hurricane hit, and the world was able to show compassion by helping the victims of the disaster. Understanding involves treating other people, as one would want to be treated, and through the act, harmony, and peace are developed in the world.
General course influence
Two of the course is that have helped in influencing a student to be a global citizen is world religions an introduction to ethics. These courses helped me as a student to develop the value for cultural diversity and also helped in enhancing cultural empathy, which are among the six outcomes of being a global citizen. In the introduction to ethics, the knowledge of values, right and wrong, as well as different values among different people. World religions offered great insight into the beliefs of different people around the globe. I was able to understand the actions and views of different people.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the say has discussed the importance of technology and its benefits in one’s personal, academic, and professional life. Besides, the elaboration of the significance of value diversity and intergroup empathy as outcomes of global citizenship. As a result of globalization, being a global citizen is essential.
