- The Torres Strait Islander people were among the first human inhabitants of Australia. They have a close connection with the land and the sea, which they regard as an integral part of who they are. The Torres Strait Islander people have a Melanesian descent, which they share with the people of Papua New Guinea, whom they also share common customs and cultural practices. Most Torres Strait Islander people rely on fishing, farming, and hunting as their main form of earning their livelihoods. They also trade with neighboring communities, which allows them to enjoy products that they are not able to produce by exchanging with what they produce. However, due to population growth, many people are moving to the mainland in search of jobs and education. The lifestyle at the Island well depicted Eddy’s action to move to Cairns to look for a job instead of relying on fishing and farming on the Island.
- Many Torres Strait Islander people face ethical issues when they move to the mainland in search of jobs and education opportunities. Life in the Island is limited, and many young people move to the mainland in an effort to better their lives. However, due to the lack of proper education and lack of knowledge of new technologies, they are often discriminated against in the job market. As a result, most of the people from the Islands only get opportunities to work an odd job with employers who disregard ethical codes of employment. Research shows that most people who face ethical issues in Australia are indigenous people. Consequently, the change in lifestyle and working in poor working conditions negatively affect their health. In the Islands, the people are used to healthy foods but are forced to eat fast foods when they move to the mainland. Life in the mainland is expensive, and hence the people are forced to eat unhealthy foods and live an unhealthy lifestyle in order to keep their jobs or continue with education.
