A habit is a behavior that a person is used to doing. Habits vary from small behaviors like nail-biting, to harmful habits like smoking. Bad habits result from boredom and stress (Zedelius et al., 2018). There are numerous ways in which a person can approach to kick a bad habit. A person can identify the behaviors that they think are not good for them. They must know exactly the habits that they would like to change so that they know what to work on specifically. Additionally, they need to identify what triggers their bad habits. Thus, they will be able to avoid situations or places that trigger them. Changing a habitual thing is difficult. Hence, it requires a lot of effort and time to overcome it.
Another way that a person can use to break a bad habit is by punishing themselves. Every time an individual engages in the behavior they want to change, they should hold themselves accountable. For example, an individual can get a jar and put money in it whenever they engage in a bad habit. Making the habit cost them money is a great motivator to stop (Peterson 2016). Additionally, individuals can reward themselves daily for beating the practice. Again, individuals should surround themselves with people who don’t engage in such activities. To illustrate, if an individual wants to quit smoking, they should cut ties with people or their friends who smoke. An individual needs to break their bad habits as they can hinder a person from attaining their goals in life.
