Since the death of Harry Porter’s parents, he had been living with his abusive uncle and aunt, Vernon and Petunia Dursley for ten years. Dursley’s son always bullied Harry Porter since he had no parents since his childhood. It was until his eleventh birthday when he received an acceptance letter to a school of witchcraft and wizardly. A half-giant person delivered that specific letter named Hagrid. This was because Harry Potter’s uncle and aunt had destroyed all the other letters. It was at that moment that Harry was told of his past. His parents, James, a wizard, and Lily, a witch, were brutally killed by the evilest and powerful wizard since time immemorial, Lord Voldemort. However, Voldemort was unable to kill Harry, and this made Harry get famous in the magical community. Voldemort was taken to exile, and all his evil powers destroyed. However, Harry never believed any part of the story since he knew his parents died of a car crash and later on Hagrid proved all that he had told him.
It was until then that Harry got formally introduced to the world of wizards and witches. He was first introduced to a hidden street, Diagon Alley. Hagrid reveals to him a fortune left to him by his parents. This was at a Wizarding Bank known as Gringotts, where he received an owl for a pet, a wand, and lastly, some supplies for school. The time he spent with Hagrid made him realize how famous he was among the witches and the wizards. After he had spent a month with Hagrid, Harry left for Hogwarts, where he would learn more of witchcraft. While on the train, he makes friends with Ronald, who was also a first-year student like him. Still, on the train, the two boys, Potter and Weasley, met with two boys; Hermione, who is gets disliked because of his attraction for spells; Draco an enemy to Potter since he exposes how Ronald’s family is faced with financial difficulty.
On their arrival, Potter, Ronald, and Hermione were assigned to Gryffindor’s house while Draco winds up in Slytherin. Slytherin was well known for prospective dark witches and wizards. Just like Draco’s family was in the Slytherin house, Draco also ends up there. On the other hand, Gryffindor was well known for people with courage, and they spent most of their time repelling attacks from the evil and greedy wizards and witches. It was in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Scotland that most of his heroic scenes got witnessed as Potter developed in his adolescent stages he learned how to fight his own battles. All kinds of fighting, including common teen challenges and also the magical side of witchcraft. Through all his problems, it was a stepping stone for him to prepare for further difficult challenges awaiting him. The greatest challenge was that of wizarding Britain’s second war.
Some heroic instances while in Hogwarts include the time when Harry and Ron were supposed to head to their common room when a troll breaks into Hogwarts. Instead, they risk their lives and go ahead to warn Hermione, who is unaware of the situation, and he is upset. The fact that they were not even friends, they still risked a plundering elf to rescue her. At first, they lock Hermione with the beast in the bathroom, but as soon as they release, they quickly hurry to save her without second thoughts. Later on, Hermione takes the blame for Harry and Ron because they were in the way of a beast. This was the beginning of a tri friendship among them. Another episode of Harry’s heroism is witnessed when he faces the Voldemort. The moment when Harry comes face to face with Voldemort, he gets blindsided with the enflamed eyes staring at him. Having no idea of what was awaiting him, the only option left for him was to hope and think.
After Voldemort inculcates Quirrell to put Harry in front of the mirror and figure out where the Philosophers stone was, Harry cleverly sabotages all that Voldemort expected. He instead pictures himself looking for the stone to keep it safe. The main aim of Harry is neither using Philosophers stone nor outwitting the glory of Voldemort, but keeping it far away from Voldemort. He successfully takes the Philosophers stone far away from the evil Voldemort since he knew if Voldemort had the stone, the situation would have been horrible. In the final chapters of the book, Harry sacrifices his life to defeat Voldemort and save the universe. However, even before his death, he completes one of the most dangerous tasks; to stop Voldemort from taking the stone, he gets in the Chambers of the secret to save Weasley’s life, and lastly, almost gets drowned saving Gabrielle. Even after his death, he gives Albus Dumbledore all the information needed to defeat Lord Voldemort. Harry finally returns to Earth however not physically in the Muggle world, but he can reunite with everything he loved.
It seems so obvious that Harry Potter is a hero because, after all, he proves his heroic acts by saving the world from the evilest person, Lord Voldemort. However, what type of hero is Harry Potter? In my view, Harry best fits to be a traditional hero; the reason behind this is that he completes all the class hero’s journeys as drawn in the Vogler’s idea. It all begins with the Call to Adventure, where it starts with Potter living a very normal life with his uncle and aunt, who treat him miserably. The beginning of a hero begins with dreams or even supernatural events. In the case of Harry, dreams show how the future will take its shape. For instance, he dreamt of a flash of green light and a motorcycle that was flying. These dreams turn out to be accurate as the flash green light signified the evil Lord Voldemort who killed his parents, and the flying motorcycle represented Hagrid, who takes him from the normal world to the world full of wonders. He is the only person who survived the brutal killings of Voldemort, making him a hero as young as he was.
Harry accepts the call by accepting to accompany Hagrid and is also happy since he is going to be far away from the ever harassing relatives. People expect Harry to be great; however, he has no idea of what is expected of him; he also has a fear of the unknown and even insecurity. The sense of insecurity also arises when he gets admitted to Hogwarts; the first process was to choose their houses. As a hero, Harry is expected to make the right decision and rise above the occasion. Before the other students are allocated to their houses, they overhear rumors of what the houses meant. According to Hat, Harry is supposed to go to Slytherin, but Harry tells Hat that he thinks he should go to Gryffindor. Harry portrayed himself as a hero because the choice he made had an essential meaning in his adventure. If a story were to be perfect, the storyline would be so dull. There have to be some imperfections; for instance, in Harry’s life, Hagrid is the one to guide Harry though he has lots of flaws and mistakes at the same time. Harry is gifted with an owl that is related to the mythology of Greek and Hindu, meaning that the owl can ensure the prosperity of the agricultural sector. The owl was also associated with luck and wisdom.
However, Hedwig could not survive the battle and left Harry heartbroken. His first magic, the broomstick which connected him to his father, also got broken. Harry crossed his first threshold when he boarded the train to head for the Wizardly school. The pat of the philosopher’s stone is where our hero Harry gets into the Belly of the Whale. Voldemort plays a role where he wants to conquer everything good and evil. Voldemort’s eyes were majorly on the philosopher’s stone, which could change any metal to gold. Besides, if anyone drunk the stone, he would be immortal, and that was Voldemort’s dream. In Greek mythology, the story of Harry and Cerberus gets linked because both of then use music to get to the underworld. Besides, Harry and his friends also use the broomstick to access the philosopher’s stone.
Harry has to face many trials, in his life of heroism, including asking for a date to the Yule Ball. As the adage goes, a love that has the power and meaning of the supreme, in this case, Harry’s goddess, was her mother who died to protect him. Harry’s life as a hero has less of a woman as temptress. The only instance where there something close to a relationship was with Ginny; he tried to push her away Ginny’s safety. Lord Voldemort was the father figure of Harry, who remained as the only obstacle for Harry. The most difficult part is that Harry has to reconcile with himself to understand that he has to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Harry is connected to Voldemort because the transferred part of his powers the moment he tried to kill Harry when he was small. His death was not the end of him; however, he needed to transcend. In the time of his death, the hero leaves his normal state of mind to a greater one; it is in this state that he gets to meet great leaders who explain to him the whole plan. It was in his death that Voldemort thought that the war was over; however, little did he know that he had killed part of himself since he was connected to Harry.
This phase is not always easy since not only has Harry destroyed himself physically but has also drained himself mentally. He has sacrificed himself for the rest of the people. This may prove that Harry is a hero; however, the war is not yet over. Harry has to get back to the distant land, which he does, and also gets reconcile the Magic world to the Muggle world where he belongs to the two worlds. Freedom and peace are ultimately found. Harry is a good example of a hero who sets out on a journey to learn and find out that there is more to life than just the quotidian. What differentiates heroes from the rest of the people is their determination to pursue their purpose. Harry is a good example since he focuses on pursuing his purpose not only for fame but also for the good of the community. His relentless efforts to rescue many lives and his unselfish acts prove his heroic journey in both the Magical World and the Muggle world.
