health disparities
As defined by Healthy People 2020, health disparities are particular types of health differences linked to other factors such as social, economic, environmental disadvantages, age, or sex. The outcome of these disparities depends on how these groups have systematically experienced severe obstacles in health based on their race, ethnicity, religion, social-economic, gender, age, mental health, sexual orientation, location, and physical disabilities or other factors linked to discrimination (People, 2020). However, social-economic factors are the most relevant factors affecting African Americans.
The African American or the black community represents approximately 13.4 % of the total United States population. Regardless of their numbers, this population experiences numerous health disparities. Chronic health conditions, inadequate access to health care, mental health, and insufficient screening are some of the most relevant health disparities experienced by the African American population (Estrada, 2005). These disparities are intensified by other factors such as lack of education, low economic status, language barriers, and language barriers.
There are numerous ways to advocate for minority groups with poorer health, such as African Americans. One of the most effective ways to advocate for this population is through educating the community. As noted earlier, the language barrier and lack of education are essential factors that impact poor health among the minorities in the U.S. It is, therefore, important to first educate this community to address the language barrier.
Promoting quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors are among the primary objectives of Healthy People 2020. Besides, the program aims to achieve health equality, eliminate disparities, and promote good health. These are some of the essential objectives that can address the numerous health disparities facing African Americans. With these objectives, the program can successfully evaluate the areas of concern and effectually address the health disparities.
