Health, Illness, and health promotion are vital topics in the nursing profession. Generally, the main goal of health promotion and disease control programs is to keep society healthy. For instance, the role of the nurse in health promotion is to empower, encourage, and engage the community in making rational decisions on observing healthy behaviors. In addition, this is to reduce the greater risk of developing chronic diseases and other related morbidities. In other words, this paper is going to focus on the following aspects of health promotion. First, to recognize the opportunities that nurses need to make promotions and develop strategies to control and manage bowel cancer across a lifespan; secondly, help in general decision making on having healthier life choices and finally creating a teaching plan to ensure the community makes wiser life choices on their lifestyle and healthy behaviors.
Nurses play a critical role in the promotion of healthier choices in modern society. This is because they play an active role in providing information to the patients on the benefits of observing healthier lifestyles. As a result, there are great opportunities in the nurses’ work environment since they can utilize their routine interaction with patients to educate them.
Health Promotion and Illness Control
People need to observe a good lifestyle and make healthier choices in life. Bowel Cancer is the second largest killer disease in the UK can be catastrophic if not well managed or maintained. Consequently, most of the lifestyle diseases are preventable and can be controlled at earlier life stages. In addition, five principles can apply to health promotion and disease control. This includes; broadening the positive health concept, involvement and participation, action and its relative competence, equity in health as well as settings perspectives. Besides, the importance of these guides and principles in health promotion helps in the achievement of enhanced life quality of the community. This creates a larger impact on general health promotion leading to advantages such as reduction of costs that could be used in managing chronic diseases as well as increased life expectancy due to healthier lifestyles and choices. In addition, the concept of well being becomes very relevant to society since the essence of disease control and management becomes the role of each member of society.
In the nursing profession, the choice of resources to be used in health promotion and disease control programs is very instrumental in the outcome of the whole process. On the other end, the program should also focus on the three pillars of interaction environment with a modern society which is the social, economic, and physical environment. The main objectives of this choice of resources are to ensure the availability of information, empowering strategies, and enabling the whole community to make better choices in their daily activities. Also, these resources are beneficial in the creation of enhanced life choices, behaviors, and habits that revolve around positive thinking on health improvement. The fundamental reason for ration choice of resources also depends on factors such as peace, shelter, and availability of food. For instance, bowel cancer has been found out to affect a particular age in the society which is averagely 50years old. The choice of resources to be used in critical assessment of such a killer disease depends on the characteristic behavior over a certain period over the cause of the disease.
A valid and trustable source of information is very vital in the determination of information to be used in final decision making. The information can be obtained from either local or national sources. This is very critical in making a conclusive datasheet and analysis of disease development and prevention. The credibility of locally obtained information is determined by the approval of local health bodies within a certain locality. This information has to be verified and true reflecting on the current statistics and distribution of the chronic disease within the community. On the other end, I would also consider data from a national source such as statistics done by organizations such as the World Health Organization. This would help me in the further development of the intervention of controlling the disease and promoting healthier strategies to curb the chronic disease. Also, the choice of source of information would be beneficial in determining areas that have been adversely affected by chronic disease. As a result, it would give a guideline on areas to focus on in terms of campaigning for health promotion.
Resource acquisition and development is very critical in health promotion. Being provided with a case study of the second largest killer disease in the UK, resource and knowledge management is vital in nursing education. In this case, the strategies to be used and observed have to prioritize factors such as building experience out of a possible pandemic. The nursing education provides for the opportunity to create a breakthrough and a possible solution to convert a pandemic disease into an endemic disease. For instance, the process I utilized in developing the available resources into tangible output entails thorough research on the general cause and patterns of occurrence of the disease. From the finding, I was able to realize that Bowel Cancer can be prevented and controlled by providing informative caution to younger generations. On the other end, the most significant process was the development of strategies that could be used and applied to a certain part of the population by the use of available information about the population. This would result in improving lifestyle choices and behavioral patterns of earlier generations to avoid future implications of the disease.
The nursing environment and workplace provides a relevant opportunity for health promotion and disease control. As a result, the nurse can provide relevant information and guidelines to the patient that can be used to prevent further occurrence of chronic diseases. The nurses can also take the workplace opportunity to inform those in attendance to the patients on way to avoid lifestyle diseases. Therefore, the nurse could have reached out to two target audiences which are the patients and those taking care of the patients. On the other end, nurses can create opportunities by joining campaigns and advertisements that inform people about healthier life practices. This can be done through the media and any other channel of communication in the modern world. Besides, nurses should also be keen on making opportunities from their surroundings. This means that they can create a contact from home to neighbors as well as at work to patients of a different illness. As a result, the nurse would have increased the surface area of information spread within a short time. This would be a great opportunity in creating awareness for the whole community on best practices of healthier lifestyles.
The role of information spread to the community is a task of each person in a particular team. For instance, in our group, all the members took to task the responsibility of educating the general community. I would evaluate my group as hardworking because each of the divided roles was done completely well and the work was done within a very short time. In addition, I would commend the ideology of teamwork in the nursing profession because it enables a large pile of work to be accomplished within a very short time.
Reflection
In this case study, the target group was the younger generation before the age group of 50years where Bowel Cancer attacks. Some of the strategies that we have used in promoting healthier lifestyles include; strengthening the communication participation, orientation of new health services, and the development of personal skills as well as the establishment of creating supportive environments. As a result, these strategies have enabled us to achieve actions such as informing people of activities that they can engage in to stay healthy and address issues that the community has been ignoring and is fundamental to influence the worst-case scenario of health. On the other end, the impacts that have been noticeable include; enabling people to increase the management of activities and hence improve life quality. It has also moved the general population to take it as a personal responsibility to guard their health and prevent further lifestyle diseases. Also, the participation of the community in campaigns and awareness programs to reduce the risk of lifestyle pandemic diseases.
The target group being the younger generations, it was important to create involvement strategies and campaigns to curb the cause of the disease at the primary levels. Some of the programs included starting teenage healthy lifestyle intervention not only to control bowel cancer but also lifestyle complications such as obesity. This was a measure to control the general health of the young population not only to a single disease but also to other possible occurring lifestyle diseases. Also, it was very important to consider that the life quality of a population depends on the active part of the population which is the youth. As a result, the easiest communication channel to reach the young population was social media. This entailed fast spread of information and relevant warnings of the possible occurrence of lifestyle diseases due to ignored healthier practices. One of the most effective communication theories was the use of short video advertisements that could educate the young generations on the benefits of healthier life choices.
The campaign process was a big responsibility and had to take extra measures to manage the task. For instance, the development stage has helped in advancing communication skills. This is because you have to learn on better ways of communicating your ideas and facts to the community to affect a successful information spread. As a nurse, it is very important to note that it is a noble opportunity to inform the community about facts about underlying diseases. As a result, it is very important to package and strategize your information in a way that is attractive to the patient and the community at large. Also, this opportunity has increased the time management skills that enable you to work within a given schedule to accomplish tasks at very convenient times. As a result, you can manage resources at both the correct and appropriate times. This makes you a very efficient nurse and very responsive to any given task.
In addition, this enhances and sharpens your leadership skills. This is because you are accorded a group to manage and obtain a result within a set period. As a manager, you are supposed to supervise and control the workflow of the duties and responsibilities of your fellow team members. Through this program, I was able to develop my skill and learn the essence of being in a team. I was able to realize that through teamwork people can achieve bigger tasks in a very short time. This motivated my life as a nurse to be based on teamwork to promote healthier lifestyle choices and behaviors.
Conclusion
Health promotion and disease control program is a very important aspect of the nursing profession. This is because it helps in achieving and actualizing of participation in changing the community through campaigns and awareness programs. Also, it helps in sharpening the theoretical skills that have been acquired in the classroom in a realistic situation. This program also helps in sharpening the personal skills of a nurse in terms of personal development. It helps in presenting facts and data to society through processes and interventions. In addition, it is a great opportunity for nurses to help in solving problems in modern society. Furthermore, the role of nursing in health promotion becomes more relevant through opportunities that have been created in the workplace. This is because it enhances creativity in the nursing career on how lifestyle problems can be solved in the modern world. I would like to recommend more programs that could engage the nurses in solving community problems. This is because it not only benefits the society but also the nurses through the building of experiences that can help in solving future problems.
