Hello Kristen
I agree with you that integrative bargaining is the best strategy to use in this situation. It is considered win-win negotiation since both parties should feel satisfied with the results of the meeting. You did a good job of giving examples of how both parties can win from the meeting. Despite Alice win position being keeping her job and completing her PIP, receiving the severance would also be a win for her. I also agree with you that that both parties should be optimistic and positive. However, I think you should Ms. Slade’s tone should be low and friendly so that it is comforting to Alice. She should take her time in the transition of her tone beginning with the good news and end with the sad news. It will help Sarah be more understanding and accepting to the reality that she is fired but she is also gaining something out of it. Lastly I agree with you that Sharon can make a good first impression by using tacit communication. Her body language should express calmness and composure so that Ms. Slade sees she wants her job back.
Hello Jason
I think I agree with you that it would not be appropriate to conduct the meeting in the employee’s room. It is because it would make the other employees curious of what is happening. I also agree with you that the meeting should be conducted in a neutral venue where both parties feel comfortable and free. However, in this case I think carrying out the meeting in a venue far from the work place would be more appropriate. I think a hotel boardroom would be more comfortable. It is because it will not evoke any feeling of nostalgia after the firing process. Lastly I share the same opinion that Sharon should use explicit communication where nothing will be left to imagination.
