helping a woman with breast cancer
My community project involved helping a woman with breast cancer. The inspiration to take this kind of community project came from my concern for the plight of older women with chronic diseases. As a result, I decided to visit the cancer ward at a nearby hospital. I wanted to deal with one particular patient and help them in their medical as well as psychological recovery journey. Thus, I requested the medical records of the ward, and I was happy when I came across the chance to help an older woman with breast cancer. The woman had been in the ward for approximately two weeks, and the disease had been diagnosed at its late stages. Apart from the medical routine checks and administrations, I helped the woman to come into terms with her condition by offering psychological counseling. I ensured that she did not feel lonely and encouraged her that all would be well. This experience was intriguing to me, and it was helpful to both my general and professional life.
I learned that social support is essential to older women with chronic illnesses. A breast cancer diagnosis can lead to an adverse psychological impact as a result of isolation, fear of death, depression, hopelessness, as well as the loss of control. Psychological support comprises of appraisal, physical, emotional as well as informational sustenance. The support can be relayed informally, formally, professionally, socially, in a specific procedure, or in an unstructured manner. Medical interventions only may be unsatisfactory to the patient, especial if they are of old age. Psychological and emotional support are critical aspects that may have a positive impact on the general welfare of people with chronic health illnesses like breast cancer. Mental sustenance can help older women with breast cancer to adapt and cope with their undesirable conditions, and this will typically lead to positive effects on their health.
