This essay will argue that hip-pop originated in the United States, so its presence is primarily related to the environment and culture of Western countries. However, I will suggest that, following the spread of hip-pop to other countries through globalization, it retains certain western cultural characteristics, but incorporates more local cultural elements, such as local language features and cultural values. The essay uses Korea, as an illustration, to explore how popular pop culture can be localized.
1: This section presents the origins and forms of hip-hop culture. What message hip-hop sends to society and what impact it has on people. Sciullo (2018, p.95) explained that hip-hop music values black creativity and excellence and focus blacks on politics, social interaction and expression. However, hip-pop culture tends to be commercialized in the South Korean market. Most entertainment companies package “idol music” as hippo music to stimulate young people’s consumption and even attract fans from different countries, thus promoting the development of the Korean economy (Um, 2013).
2: This section will introduce an underground hip-hop genre in Korea. Um (2013, p.52) said that this attack by Korean rappers on the mainstream music industry and K-pop is part of the established genre rules of Korean hip-hop (especially underground hip-hop) as a self-certifying behaviour, although it is often seen as a self-promotion strategy. This section will also explain the difference between hip-pop music created by entertainment companies and underground rappers. It is worth noting that underground hippo music also dominates the mainstream Korean music market because underground hip-hop singers also have a certain fan base.
3: This section introduces the unique characteristics of hip-hop culture. Korean hip hop does not have a gang culture because East Asian countries influence its main cultural background. Their lyrics do not include the free-flowing words of Western hip-hop, such as prison and powdery words. And introduce the way Korean hip-pop lyrics rhyme. And the main way of spreading Korean hip-hop culture.
