History Documentary: Night and Fog
In the documentary video, Alain Resnais remembered a period where the Holocaust was unexamined and recent. Alain uses newsreel footage, which was black-and-white, to verify the narrative of the distinctive century rationalization form of barbarism during rise of the Third Reich and Hitler’s deportation programs and exterminations to trials of Nuremberg, intercutting contemporary footage color ruining Auschwitz. Therefore, a speck to a documentary tells about planned disappearance in nations inhabited by Germany. Resnais displayed unsparingly horrified victim images who survived, but others died downplaying race motive of hatred. Filmmaker’s goal was to do viewer acclimatization of horrors, or prompt unequal shock scare (Night & Fog, 2017). The story in the documentary does not have war talks in finality terms but states that the conflict is merely inactive rather than kaput. Night and Fog horror documentary was intended to be elegy-free but call to act; therefore, Night and Fog’s message was darkly pessimistic.
Specifically, Night and Fog emphasized the masked slow pace exponential rate in which the camp concentration was growing. Italian-Jewish accepted gradual encroachment of powerless and fascist to resist when the Nazi’s final resolution was implemented. In ending the war, populace of camps dwarfed neighboring cities, happening executions with frequency where there was no time to burying the dead.
Considering modernity, the documentary mixes visual color photography for the current situation while black-and-white symbolizing the past. Night and Fog fit in ideology in that it talked about deportation programs and extermination to trials. Night and Fog revealed how the filming industry is evolving by employing different colors: visual color and black-and-white. Technologically, Night and Fog remain to be the utmost horror movie to have ever made.
