History of ethical studies
Ethic studies started back in 1968 and 1969 when the black student union seceded to speak out against the systematic discrimination. These students protested due to the lack of access, overall neglect of the people of color, and misrepresentation. Among the group members were American Indian Studies, Black Studies, Asian American Studies, and La Raza Studies were among the groups that came together and made demands of both respects for all the cultures in the picture and of the indigenous individuals all over the United States.
The above departments from all the faculty’s faculty and the San Francisco University staff came together. They affirmed the ethical studies foundation following diverse principles through a generated committee engaging in research, teaching, and activism. Their main interest was respect to the community members in education models, epistemologies, diverse community believes, and ecologies. The primary purpose of this organization was to redefine the lives of color using their perspectives.
Such a foundation has been historically significant, mainly because it gives the students the chance to learn about their fellow students’ historical events. History tells, as I stated earlier, about the possibility that took place in the year 1968 and 1969, where both the students and the staff came together and fought discrimination at the University of San Francisco. It was a significant movement, for we now view a racist to deny ethical studies in the higher learning institutions. Such a problem raise has been historically significant in the ways that I will discuss below.
As much as it took about 50 years for the universities to practice ethical studies, it was worth the wait, for there were several positive results. Through the movement, a proper establishment of leaders’ development engaging in rigorous self-determination was created. Every student is also in a place where they easily acquire education on the different cultures right from their experiences, struggles and traditional beliefs. The issue of racism also came to an end from the accomplishments of colors in the people in the different geographic areas by making connections with all local transnational.
Ethical issues were previously handled with force as we have seen in the San Francisco video where the students decided to engage in a demonstration that went on for approximately 5 months. There was brutality that reduced the percentage of the black people in the University From 12% to 3% which did not happen as a coincidence but rather a result of the injustices that were there at the time. However, the students in union with the staff members made it upon themselves to liberate this oppression and that every individual who applies for the University be admitted if they fulfill the required standards. Racism is known to keep people divided, so they practiced the demonstration to show the government then that every individual can be treated equally regardless of their race.
The demonstration, therefore, marked the start of ethical studies. The historical, ethical studies started when every individual joined in the student’s strive by fighting for the student demand after realizing that they too were oppressed by the system. the faculty Unions and AFT stopped looking at themselves as the professions for the impacts were louder when even the police started taking forceful measures trying to stop the strive. They all pledged for unity and fought for the personal justice for innocent students and other members of the public were denied they personal rights and freedom across the nation.
From the discussion here are some of the ideas that support the ethical studies discipline. First, the foundation was made to focus on the United States’ overall welfare but not for the groups that took part in ensuring it was emerging. The US is known for its heavy political and economic investment. It was only fair enough that they adopt proper ethical studies systems that were only possible after the agreement by both the government and the US citizens.
Among the ideas supporting this kind of move is proper understanding of every individual’s origins and their traditions. It is to say that it reached a point where the campus acknowledged the fact that as much the students are coming from different parts of the world, they were all equal and are in the University for One Common Interest, which is to acquire knowledge. Having this in mind, the curriculum was changed, and everyone was in a position where they gain knowledge without any discrimination as much as they all had different historical events, cultural or even the sociological.
The other key idea behind the ethical studies’ practice is proper distinction of race and ethnicity, which in most cases mistaken for other things. The term ethnicity may be seen to be causing mischievous behaviors mostly on hostility among the students of different color living in the same environment. The idea behind it is the impact of race studies, that is, being aware of the ethnicity of the people around and thus the generation of respect and discipline while relating to everyone around. By studying ethnicity, the students will be able to learn about other people’s different experiences without fear of meeting up as result of racism.
The other idea supporting the having the ethical studies is disputing the view that there should be a good scholarship necessary as an objective and not putting into consideration the different traditions. They are therefore, supposed to acknowledge every traditional discipline through all the political procedures and in a morally upright manner. For instance, looking at the University of San Francisco, a formed department focuses on the immigration, slavery, and confinement of all students. It means that every student’s rights and freedoms are well taken care of through proper studies on the different languages and the diverse cultural beliefs.
Thus, both the professors and the students are supposed to take part in the ethical studies for its main purpose: creating awareness and fairness within a university and across the nation. For such a movement to take effect as seen, the people should unite and bring together different ideas like how the students decided on striking for about 5 months. The students came together seeking help by acknowledging that we are all human who have rights and freedoms and that no one is more important than the other one.
In conclusion, we have learnt that, racism existed back in the days and our elder’s one fought so hard for human rights. Therefore, our personal responsibility is to ensure that we are our brother’s keeper in ensuring that we do not oppress people because of things that cannot be changed. Skin color is one characteristic that an individual is born with. It is, however, saddening to see people being discriminated against for their physical appearance. The University of San Francisco is an excellent example of the unity that we all supposed to emulate. They showed the value of life by ensuring that everyone had the same rights.
