Horror and Film
Movies and films are a great source of entertainment for many individuals primarily because they arouse a wide range of human emotions which leads to emotional and social satisfaction. One of the film genres that has attracted a large number of audiences is horror-based entertainment. It is interesting to see how viewers are captivated by scary scenes and often take delight in the sensation of fear and fright. This paper will discuss why people enjoy watching horror films and the impact that such films have on the viewer. The discussion will draw several examples from a supernatural horror film titled “Final Destination 3”, to explain the concepts more clearly.
According to psychologist Glenn. D Walters, there are three main motivating factors that allure individuals to watch horror films. These include; tension, unrealism, and relevance which are all considered to be co-relative factors rather than causative factors (Csponline). This is because they are intricately connected with the personality type of an individual. For instance, an individual who has an adrenaline personality type will desire to have a feeling of fear, not because they delight in fear but because they are satisfied by the emotional response that comes out of frightening situations. That emotional effect is triggered by the tension (often generated by mystery, shock, suspense, and terror), unrealism (the viewer feels a sense of control knowing that the film is only fictional) and relevance (which is the ability of the audience to relate with the characters in the film) (Griffiths). To support this argument, let us consider the film “Final Destination 3” and see how these three factors are deeply embedded in the production of horror based movies.
