Horror movies

Horror movies are at the core of American history. Since after independence, the theatres started adopting monsters and horror characters to represent several vices in the society (Hendrickson, 4). One of the most evident characters of a traditional and modern horror movie is the ability to evoke fear and set a diabolical situation in society. While these films were designed to create a need for security, thus establishing religion and heroes, they led to the inversion of the American dream by setting a mentality that shaped the consumerisms and moral patterns. The inherent fear created by the horror movies reflected the horrors of real life when people are faced with life and death choices.

A film like Frankenstein (8) shows the thin line between horror and morality. When Frankenstein was first aired, he encountered a small girl by the river, and the general expectations were that he would tear the girl into pieces. Instead, he became friendly and played with the girl alongside the riverbanks (10-12). Such a correlation between horror and compassion shows the difference between the social perception of people and their true nature. While it is easy for us to expect someone to be a friend, it is also equally likely that they are monsters and vice versa. Films such as Seventh Victim (1943), shows the contract between people’s desires in society (17).

In the film, The Stuff creates a feeling there are no limits when it comes to psycho. The film sought to challenge the known convention about rationality and negotiation when it comes to motivated crime. Psycho could kill tenths of people without remorse. The directors of the films sought to present the ugly side of violence and horror where the victims have no chance to negotiate for life. The history of horror movies, although with religious connotations mostly sought to express the unimaginable levels immorality to which people are likely to adopt in extreme situations.
