How do we discern what is accurate from hidden biases?
Introduction
Based on the fact that a person has to encounter many challenges in daily life, it is therefore important to have a clear understanding of how they make decisions. However, making the appropriate decision at timed may fail since it is hard to discern what is accurate due to increased biases in the information received. Therefore, this calls attention to the development of critical thinking skills to assist in decision making. In this case, critical thinking is the ability to have clear and rational thinking about what to do or believe. Therefore, this essay will help a psychology student understand the elements of critical thinking and their assistance in discerning what is accurate from hidden bias.
Think of a recent example in which you did not use critical thinking.
Having acquired knowledge as a nurse, I had my practical session where I was posted as a triage nurse in the hospital. At the incident, my duty was to analyze patients’ cases to decide the order by which treatment would occur. On my duty, I failed to understand the need of a patient due to lack of critical thinking on the matter at hand hence making the uninformed decision to a patient in need of agent medical attention. Due to failure in utilizing critical thinking, the patient was delayed in the waiting line in pain.
What could/should you have done to ensure you based your judgment or decision on valid information?
In making a decision, it is important to understand the wait of the intended decision. Therefore, in the case above, it could be the best option if I engaged another party in my decision to understand the issue at hand and the necessary approach (Spielman, Jenkins & Lovett, 2020). Seeking assistance from another nurse to evaluate the patient’s need would have given me a clear approach in directing the patient in the right direction for treatment.
How would “looking deeper” and think for yourself change your opinion or behavior?
Change of ones’ behavior can be changed through change of emotions on how one perceives certain decision. Through cleating a clear self-awareness by self-confrontation can be a precise way to change ones’ opinion of behavior (Spielman, Jenkins & Lovett, 2020). Paying attention to the inner self gives room to create a positive mindset for an intended intention, hence making a great change in opinion.
How will the information you have learned about critical thinking influence you in the future?
Decision making is an aspect of everyday life that no one can survive without; this is due to the increased biases brought about by increased social media. However, being informed on critical thinking gives great hope as it assists in reasoning skills. With a lot of challenges, critical thinking will assist me in the line of a career undertaking thorough evaluation skills (Spielman, Jenkins & Lovett, 2020). Evaluation skills will help make a clear evaluation based on patient needs at the hospital, hence making the right treatment plan.
Do you think that we are losing the ability to think critically, and what can be done?
With a lot of means to access information, people have become less active in thinking; hence it is true that we are losing the ability to think critically. When there is ready information on the reach, people have no chance to engage in critical thinking, therefore leading to loss of ability to critically thinking (Spielman, Jenkins & Lovett, 2020). However, this being the case, there is a need to understand that, as more as people fail to think critically, errors at work or any social sector will continue to create conflict in communication. Therefore, people need to engage in paying attention to their reactions based on what they hear or read and see on news, social media posts, and others to ensure critical thinking is utilized before making decisions.
Conclusion
Critical thinking is significant in our daily life as it assists in making an informed decision without bias. From this essay, we can attest to the fact that critical thinking assists in increasing people’s perception and assumption and assisting people in engaging in deep emotions to make the right decisions. Therefore, it is important to engage in critical thinking as it assists in logical skills in problem-solving.
