The way an author utilizes literary elements and texts in writing plays an important role of helping readers to gain an understanding of the meaning of the text. An author’s writing style include the use of formal and informal language, word choice (diction), and tone. Depending on the audience, purpose, and genre, authors have the freedom to use a wide variety of writing styles. Therefore, therefore, the analysis of an author’s writing style leads to an understanding of form of text utilized in the writing process and further the content of text used in the writing. This paper outlines ways in which one can analyze the form of text used in different writing and how it creates an understanding of the content of the text.

As students make progress through the education system, reading and writing expository type texts in content-based subjects becomes significantly important. However, at one point or another, learners struggle to understand types of texts used in various writing. Readers may struggle to understand content of texts since either the language or vocabulary used in writing is way beyond their comprehension, the reader has a limited understanding of the discussion topic, among other problems that learners experience in writing and reading texts (Al Otaiba, Carol McDonald and Elizabeth, 2000). One way to address this problem is to educate learners on how to identify text structures that authors use to convey meaning in writing. An adequate understanding of text structure works effectively in helping students improve their comprehension of text content.

Text structures are mental constructs and patterns of thinking that writers use to help in making sense of or responding to what they see, read, and hear. Text structures are considered as top-notch since they form the essence of cognitive and organizational frameworks of textual content. Form of text is developed to help readers gain a better understanding of what is considered as effective and appropriate use of language across different texts and contexts (Hodges, and Sharon, 60). Therefore, writers spontaneously use form of a text as means of creating meaning to content and providing instruction to readers. Text structures generally follow the description, compare and contrast, problem-solution, cause-effect, and sequence-time patterns. Based upon these patterns, readers can easily follow through a particular type of writing and gain a better comprehension of content presented to them.

To create meaning to writing, authors attempt to establish the themes for their work, which is created through structure. The way an author organizes the text and the general writing structure affects the way the readers interpret its meaning. This is because all elements of writing are directly related to structure of the text. Therefore, readers must spend quality time studying the organization text structure within different forms of writing to gain a better understanding of the ideas are organized and presented and the overall meaning of content of the text (Meyer and Melissa, 141). For instance, in reading a poetic work, readers might want to understand the use of sonic devices and patterns of word repetition within that piece of writing to gain a better understanding of content presented to them.

Word repetition, for instance, in constructing text structure involves repetition of particular phrases in a certain manner to imply emphasis. For instance, an author can decide to make repetitions of the last words of a sentence to emphasize on their importance. Through this repetition, readers are guided to identify important textual content that the author is trying to express (Hebert, et al., 10). Additionally, authors can use anaphora, the repetition of same words at the beginning of successive clauses to emphasize on the importance of the content that they are relaying to the reader. Besides, in constructing a form of a text, authors can use various sonic devices to facilitate and enhance the presentation of content of a text to the reader. For instance, sonic devices such as alliteration and assonance are used by authors in constructing a form of a text to create desired effects in writing, convey and reinforce meaning of a text through creating sound patterns.

Ideally, text structure is created to provide an indication the organization of ideas within a written text. Texts that have logically flowing structures and arrangements helps readers to readily understand the main ideas and arguments presented to them. In many cases, students attempt to recognize text structures used in various writings to monitor their level of comprehension of the content of the text (Al Otaiba, Carol McDonald and Elizabeth, 2010). In many cases, the proper understanding of text structure and content involves the ability of the reader to properly paragraphs that corresponds to various text structures and perform an examination of topic sentences that act as clues to specific text structures. From this analysis, readers can effectively make sense of text content presented to them.

Furthermore, form of the text is usually aligned with pathos, since it often employ the use of figures of speech that attempt to persuade the reader through use of emotional appeals. An author’s selection of text structure is concerned with the establishment and mitigation of credibility and authority within a sentence and the overall piece of writing. Text structure is used deliberately by an author to convey specific mood, content, and effect on the reader (Hebert, et al. 27). Text structure is an essential part of appeal to logic and reasoning especially when fact schemes of repetition as used to enhance clarity and coherence, which are the attributes of appeal through logos. When a piece of writing contains all the appeals, pathos, logos, and ethos, depending on the content that an author wishes to present to the readers, the text structure will be developed categorically to give more meaning and dominance to the type of appeal that the author wishes to stand out.

Form of a text is the way in which writers arrange words and letters within a sentence to help the readers gain a better understanding of content presented by the writer. In many cases, form of a text act the guiding force towards the way a reader understands and makes sense of the content of a text that an author attempts to relay through writing. With a proper presentation of text structure within a sentence, it becomes easier for a writer to present facts logically and persuade readers to think and reason in a certain manner.
