How police brutality is impacting social justice in the criminal justice
The law allows the police to use legitimate force if needed to maintain peace, order, and when making arrests. However, the amount of force used in different situations is contentious. When the police use too much force, it violates the law. Police brutality refers to conscious and deliberate actions taken by the police towards suspects from a powerless social group. Most people feel that the police cannot protect them, and instead, they make the problem worse; it makes the people lose faith and trust in the police. The role of the police is to maintain law and order and prevent crimes. The decline in confidence and trust in the police is harmful to minimizing criminal tendencies and improving security. When citizens lack trust in the police, people feel that they do not have any purpose in society.
Strategies used to control Police brutality
The check police brutality, police administration needs to be proactive. For instance, training the police and formulating laws that limit the use of force by the police. The controls require supervisors to carry out surveillance from time to time and discipline individuals against the rules. Any complaints regarding the use of force, and corruption allegations, must be investigated to ascertain if it is true (Ehrenfeld & Harris, 2020). Proper disciplinary measures should be preferred on the officer found guilty. Civilian reviews can also be used to prefer disciplinary measures against rogue police officials. The review assesses the complaints and recommend appropriate disciplinary measure against the accused police official and recommend appropriate disciplinary measure (Carter, 2016, p. 521). Another measure is developing warning systems to classify the police with high rates of complaints from the public. The complaints must be investigated, verified, and the involved individuals punished or counseled accordingly.
