However, unlike other clients, patients who receive terminal diagnoses are faced with a disproportionate burden of this stigma. For this reason, the presence of a competent counselor to aid them in the transition period following diagnosis, and during the often harrowing treatment period, is of absolute importance. An additional assessment tool chosen for applicant evaluation is the Myers-Briggs personality test tool.

Suitability of Myers-Briggs Personality Test Tool

Ensuring the quality of patient experience and therapy is accompanied by extra factors outside the practitioner’s sheer competence. The individual psychotherapist’s personality plays a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining an understanding between the client and the entire team of healthcare professionals involved in their care. Additionally, the variety of circumstances that could affect the treatment outcome of an individual patient is broad. Some general factors that do influence client experience include family, social and economic circumstances. Additionally, in a study done to evaluate the personality types of medical students in Karachi University and its correlation with their preferred specialty choice, it was found that there was a significant correlation between personality and specialty preference. (Jafrani et al., 2017). A correlational assessment can hence be made on applicants’ relative compatibility for this job as predicted by the Myers-Briggs personality test.

Another study done on the association between the Myers-Briggs personality test and psychiatry as a profession by Chaong Yung and colleagues revealed that some improvements were associated with awareness of one’s personality type. Some of the improvements noted include communication, team collaboration, mentor-mentee relationships, and reduced workplace conflicts. (Yang, C., Richard, G., & Durkin, M., 2016). The findings provide further corroboration of the Myers-Briggs personality test suitability in assessing applicants for the patient counselor post.

Conclusion

In sum, the Myers-Briggs personality test indicator is selected as most suitable to augment the responses obtained from the interview questionnaire designed for interviewees applying for a patient counselor position at an oncology department. The tool has been demonstrated to be of sufficient reliability and effectiveness in predicting personality traits’ appropriateness, especially of medical professionals. It enables an assessment of healthcare practitioners’ ability to connect with their patients, and thus favorably guide their interactions to be of utmost benefit. This tool can help gauge potential patient counselors’ capability for being empathetic in interacting with clients at the oncology wing.
