Human Resource Management: Policies and Practices
Human capital in any organization plays an objective role in gaining a competitive advantage when used effectively. As a result, organizations increasingly strive to develop and manage human resources by implementing and enhancing HRM policies and practices to achieve the desired direction (Paauwe J. a.). At the Hilti Emirates, one of the biggest construction businesses in UAE, human resources are essential. The organization has put in place various HRM policies to ensure it effectively manages its employees for competitiveness. This paper analyses the HRM policies at the Hilti Emirates with a view of highlighting the successes and gaps and making recommendations for improvements.
The Hilti Emirates has dominated the construction industry in Dubai and globally with remarkable technological designs and outstanding products and services (The Sunday times). It was ranked as one of the best by corporate surveyors, including fortunes and Sunday times in 2015 and 2016 (The Sunday times). Hilti uses a human resource system that allows the company to manage employee performance and reward them accordingly. Notably, Hilti conducts numerous awards ceremonies for best practices such as talent management (“Awards”). Therefore, this strategy has proven to be a successful HRM tool as it has given Hilti a competitive advantage in the construction industry through effective employee motivation.
Top-notch training and development practices is a policy used by Hilti in HR management. The company facilitates programs such as the Hilti Outperformer, a two-year program that helps employees learn from their global counterparts, among other benefits such as attending global summits business management trainings (“Awards”). Hilti operates on on-job learning processes designed to impact skills to new employees. Arguably, this practice can place an organization ahead of other companies by enhancing employee performance and objectively imparting vital skill sets in the HR management system. Therefore, engaging employees in hands-on training programs can effectively boost employee performance and human capital management.
Legal compliance policies compel organizations to be in line with labor laws and maintain a professional HR management system. At Hilti, this policy is not extensively exercised because of the frequently changing labor laws in Dubai (“UAE Labor Law |”). Compliance with these laws improves an organization’s human resource performance by giving employees an assuring of safety working environment. Threatening this safety through layoffs, for example, would cause anxiety among employees and negatively impact performance. Because of the changing labor laws, this policy creates a gap in Hilti’s HRM depreciates the efforts to gain competitive advantage by directly affecting employee work conditions.
