Hypothesis testing
Hypothesis testing is the backbone of any research, putting all the pieces of research in place.
It entails a step by step approach that helps prove the probability of a hypothesis given by a researcher being right. The researcher analyzes data collected from the research in making the final deductions. For instance, hypothesis testing can be used on research to determine the effect of assessment tests on students. After hypothesis testing is done on the sample, it would prove whether adding an assessment to classwork will positively or negatively impact the student’s results. The outcome will be used on the general population to project the same impact observed.
Another example would be the testing of a particular drug to examine if it can cure a disease. A sample of the people suffering from the ailment would be used to obtain statistics in hypothesis testing. The impact of the drug is recorded and analyzed to determine its effect on the patients. Obtaining a given statistical significance level would help in realizing the drug’s effectiveness, and a decision on whether to use it will be reached.
A null hypothesis is created together with an alternative hypothesis at the beginning of hypothesis testing. It is a statement that tries to refute the research hypothesis. The choice on whether to reject or accept the null hypothesis, which is mostly dismissed, is made at the last stage of testing. This decision is reached after a series of steps. First would be the collection of the sample data, which is done using different methods depending on the type of hypothesis.
Nonetheless, a statistical test is conducted where the variance is used in most varieties. A comparison of the between-group variance and within-group variance will produce the probability value. The probability value is studied to see if it has any statistical significance. Ultimately, the value being significant means that the results obtained could happen too frequently; therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected.
In the medical field research, hypothesis testing is of much importance as it is to other fields. It has helped in determining whether certain vaccinations or drugs are effective in treating or managing diseases. Furthermore, it has aided in comparison of drugs to ascertain, which offers the best services to the patient. Finally, hypothesis testing has helped relate aspects of health, such as a proper diet will lead to fewer ailments. In all these, the testing has greatly improved the patient-medic interactions that have added value to service delivery. This is due to the fact that the patients are often used as the sample to obtain data that would consequently help them if the research is approved.
