Identify the senators and house of rep in California and define the three main legislative priorities for each one and whether you agree or not.
The legislation defines the process of reviewing bills before enacting them into laws. The legislature in California is bicameral, consisting of the upper house and the lower house. The lower house comprises of eighty assembly members while the Senate has forty senators(Senate.ca.gov. 2). Senators are elected on four-year terms.
The state of California has two senators in the United States senate; Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein. And while both senators are from the Democratic Party, each one champions for different legislative issues. For instance, Senator Dianne Feinstein advocates for the Protection of the California Desert and Oceans, Protection of the West Coast Ocean, and Justice for juvenile victims of sex crimes. Senator Kamala Harris, on the other hand, champions for better healthcare and criminal justice system, worker protection market regulation and economic assistance, and finally, Oversight on Immigration issues. (Gov. track 1) Given globalization and diversification and environmental issues affecting world populations, these senators’ prioritization on human welfare and environmental legislation plays a significant role in the lives of the people of California.
Further, in the United States House of Representatives, California has fifty-three representatives. The representatives are also called members of Congress and are elected for a two-year term. Each representative is usually selected based on their agenda for the people in their jurisdiction. For example, John Garamendi is a representative of the Third District. Garamendi’s top legislative priorities are the creation of a vibrant agricultural sector, creation of job opportunities for the domestic populace, and provision of quality education for a productive workforce (House.gov 1). These priorities serve to promote food production and education, which are fundamental human rights. Jobs also play a crucial role in the development of any competitive economy. Thus, the legislative issues fronted by both the senators and the representative reflect a genuine concern that addresses the pertinent issues affecting their electorates.
