There is an increasing percentage of people experiencing identity theft, according to the survey. Most of these issues have been on the rise from one year to the other. In most cases, identity theft issues incorporate the misuse or attempted misuse of the existing accord relates to another person. Identity theft also involves opening new accounts and manipulating the current account to fit the needs of the individuals involved in these crimes. The criminals have been using the credit card and bank account as possible targets for identity theft. These crimes are considered as identity theft in most of the cases.

For instance, in 2016, the individuals 16 years and older who participated in a survey reported being the victim of identity theft. According to the study, facts show that there is an estimate of 10% of people at this age that were victims of theft in 2016 (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2019, January). The survey shows that females are at risk of experiencing identity them more than males. Mostly, the whites continue to share more issues of identity them more than the other races. According to the survey, other people are the ones between the ages of 35 to 49. Then ages between 50 to 64 have a high possibility of experiencing identity theft (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2019, January). More so, an individual’s high incomes also have an increased risk of experiencing identity theft.

People at this risk of identity are likely to face various harms. They happen to experience a financial problem after the experience. However, a large number of victims will suffer from emotional distress resulting from this incident. There are more problems in resolving the issue and clearing the problem, leading to such severe distress. This shows that the harms may not just be economic issues. The emotional effect might be more painful than the financial impact. It might take more time to recover from the problem.

According to this survey, it is estimated that at least 7% of the victims of identity theft tend to report the issue to the police (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2019, January). A good number of people do not report the issue because they can handle the issue differently. Others do not see the nee the need to report it. Another section of the victims do not know about reporting the issue, or even the reporting does not cross their mind at all.
