Coaching is a form of development where an experienced person supports a learner in achieving personal or professional goals by providing training and guidance. Coaching is viewed as an essential tool for career development (McCracken & Heaton, 2012). Organizational performance is dependent on employees’ performance; therefore, they should possess various skills. Lack of such skills means coaching should be done to enhance them. I have experienced coaching in several instances in my career. My coach played an essential role in training and guiding me to be a productive employee. He provided guidance and constructive feedback, which made me identify my strengths and weaknesses, and they enhanced better performance in my field of expertise. He also had better communication skills and was able to adjust to my personality. He valued my opinions and initiatives, valued my efforts, and empowered me through positive feedback and reinforcement.

I had a positive attitude towards coaching since I knew that a positive outlook helps things run smoothly and results in a more enjoyable experience. Since coaches dedicate their time to get the most out of their learners, learners must actively engage in building a strong relationship with their coaches. Learners should practice active listening and take feedback seriously. Curiosity is required to learn from the coach, and even if one has a clue on what is coached, it should be retired. It is good to follow the coach from the beginning to the end. Taking time to do any assignment from the coach is essential, and one should avoid follow-up. One must be exposed to the coach to learn, and the trust between the learner and the coach should not be broken. Coaching supports new thinking which can lead to a continuous improvement change processes (Prydale, 2011)
