Research on sex equips the general population with knowledge on different sexual orientations such as genderqueer, gender non-conforming and transvestism, which most of the time are considered as abnormalities. Also, sex research enables us to get a deep insight into various aspects of the society that affects the sexuality of an individual. I feel that, though much research has been done on sexuality, special attention should be given on the relationship between one’s upbringing in the family and sexuality. This is because, family, through its socialization role, plays a critical function in shaping the sexuality of a person. Researches that examine one’s sexual desire should be prohibited as they can contain some considerable invasion to privacy.
Alfred Kinsey, in what is referred to as Kinsey report, a discovery was made on various sexual behaviours, the role of masturbation was re-evaluated and the aspect of abnormal/normal routine put to an end. These results were gained after conducting more than 18,000 interviews on sexual behaviour. Overtime, Alfred Kinsey research has been attributed to the trends in sexuality. However, I would argue that, though the study yielded results relevant in understanding various sexual behaviours, the inclination to homosexuality offered the justification of sexual expression. According to his rating scales, individuals were rated from a range of 0-6 with 0 being exclusively heterosexual and six being exclusively homosexual. This way, his research seems to be praising homosexuality more.
In the effort of contributing towards the full range of valuable results on sex and sexuality, I would freely volunteer to be a participant. This is because, I believe that, for the general population to avoid stereotyping or making assumptions on specific sexual behaviours and orientation, enough and accurate information is required. The type of sex research that I would volunteer to is survey research. Throughout the study, assured confidentiality, I will comfortably volunteer information on my sexuality.
