In most college campuses, games and sports are taken as part of school programs that keep some of the learners occupied during their leisure time. It has been argued several times that it’s necessary to cater for college athletes in terms of payment simply because some of the sports generate money for the colleges. Furthermore, paying the athletes would be part of the compensation for athletes’ hard work and hence cannot be taken for granted. In some instances, some universities tend to have large groups of athletes who are extensively divided into divisions, and therefore it becomes difficult to cater to their wages due to large numbers.
Besides, I tend to think that paying the college athletes would kill the theme of games and sports on campuses because generally, that would result may be to the signing of contracts that will call for dominance, and this would affect other school programs. Imagine of a situation when the school team is composed of members who have already completed their studies at the campus, this is not what the campus colleges are about, they create games and sports as part of entertainment and hence no need for contracts meant for paying athletes in the long run. In case of any payment plan in any sports program by the college administration, this will attract protests from all other programs of sports demanding payment hence not necessary at all.
Even though some college sports attract a lot of money, for instance, NCAA in the United States had revenue close to one billion dollars in the year 2017 courtesy of college events in sporting. However, introducing a payment program for those athletes will be a problem because college is more about building one’s career that he or she would undertake in the future, and therefore the question of payment should not arise. Nevertheless, if college athletes are provided with excellent services such as transport allowances, health insurance, food, gym for a workout, and maybe free tuition; this means there is no need for payment plans since they got rewarded in many ways.
In general, I tend to disagree with the post about the need to pay college athletes, despite the fact that some of the sports programs they participate in generate income for the school. Payment of college athletes would bring in so many complications and hence protests due to disparities and maybe lack of equality because colleges tend to host numerous types of sports; therefore, large numbers of athletes. Games and sports activities also help in sustaining a healthy life free from some infections, and thus students in colleges still need to do exercises for their benefit.
