Inequality in the Society
QUESTION 1: Research has shown that gay and lesbians experience many challenges, including discrimination, societal stigma and denial of their human and civil rights. Discrimination is associated with an increase in substance abuse, psychiatric disorders and suicide. Homophobia arises from protests that oppose gay and lesbian marriage, especially from the Catholic clergy. Besides, calls from the internet petitions for banks to disinvest countries that protect gay and lesbianism. There are several myths related to gay and lesbianism, such as same-sex parents, who tend to harm their kids. People turn out to be lesbians if there was insufficient same-sex modelling by their parents. Also, do not live long like the heterosexuals. Gay inequality can be overcome by visibility. Gay and lesbians should step up and foster their environment to feel safe, both emotionally and physically.
QUESTION 2: The main difference between Marx and Weber’s understanding of social is that Marx focused much on the economy affects the social class and based his thinking on the economic impact. At the same time, Weber believed that changes that occur in society are beyond the economic sphere of society. Weber suggests that; a significant source of inequality is a form of power in society, whereas Marx indicates that difference in the community comes from opportunities surrounding an individual. Besides, bias can be transferred from one generation to another.
QUESTION 3: gender inequality is a form of acknowledgement that states that men and women are not equal. Gender inequality comes from differences in psychology, cultural norms and biology. The top issues that fuel gender inequality are racism, sexual harassment, promotion of men more often than women and unequal pay. Examples of gender inequality include rape, sexual assault and violence against women. The best way to stop gender inequality is by empowering mothers, getting women into power, educating women and giving appropriate value to their work.
QUESTION 4: Institutional discrimination is the mistreatment of an individual by society. Discrimination can occur in working areas where managers formulate a policy that states that employees must work fulltime. Women may be disadvantaged because, in most cases, they work part-time. Defacto discrimination existed due to neighbourhoods and voluntary associations, while Dejure discrimination existed due to local laws. Jim Crow laws are an example of local laws that enforced racial discrimination in the US.
QUESTION 5: Poverty is functional in American society because dirty work gets done, and people work at a low-wage. Poverty is also dysfunctional in American society because to achieve a sustainable livelihood; people have to work more, which means a lack of access to education, essential goods and services, malnutrition and hunger. For poverty to reduce in the US, immigration should be reformed, employment should be increased, and mass incarceration should be stopped. The solutions should rest in society because or those problems come from many people and not an individual
QUESTION 6: The functionalist perspective views society as a system that works hand in hand with other parts to enhance stability. Herbert Spenser’s theory of stratification states that societies can evolve from complex forms. Davis and Moore’s theory of stratification is similar to Spencer’s thesis of Social Darwinism. They both say that some people become dominant because they are innately better than others in the same society.
