Influence of Spoken and Body Language
Validation by Kurt Kuenne is an entertaining short film that explores the social role of spoken and body language to influence people’s social esteem. The main cast is a parking lot attendant who loves to see other people happy and to attain that, he gives them a nice compliment to make them come back the next day. However, when he gets a driving license, he meets a woman that he falls in love with, but she always has a frown on and has no room to smile. He tries to make her smile more, which is eventually achieved, making the film more of a love story. The film employs various body language like gestures, eye contact, smiles, voice, facial expressions, and touch to impact people’s self-esteem. Moreover, it employs enticing and cautious language to make people feel good or bad about themselves.
The film has employed the use of smiles in several scenes to change people’s attitudes. The film’s first scene reveals a man who walks into the garage attendant’s place and goes direct to the reason he was there. He kept insisting on how he was there to get a validation. The parking attendant instead takes his time and smiles at the man who then possesses for a while but smiles back. In the end, he leaves the parking lot, a smiling man who feels good about himself. It further explores facial expressions to impact how people feel about themselves. Due to the impact, the parking lot attendant has on people, more people come to the garage, making it a course of concern for the management. As they approach the attendant to question him, he looks at them innocently with a welcoming fail expression. It changes their attitude towards what he does as they begin to feel appreciated hence raising their self-esteem.
The parking lot attendant has an enticing voice that helps henge the way people feel about themselves. As he compliments his customers, he employs tonal variation in his voice, which catches their attention. His voice is subjective, implying that whatever he is saying about the people is true. Due to this, people like to listen to him more often as his voice has the power to impact how they feel about themselves. In the scene where he had given up about his mission to make people smile, he uses a sad voice to compliment a guy saying he looks okay. The guy leaves the garage feeling low, which can be seen from his facial expression as he even walks facing down, a sign of low self-esteem. The parking lot attendant further maintains eye contact with his customers. As he complements them, he looks directly into their eyes as he tells them how good they look. It captures their attention as they want to hear more of what he is saying. It makes his customers feel good about themselves.
The film has also employed spoken language to reveal the impact it has on people’s self-esteem. The parking lot attendant uses kind and enticing words to talk to his customers to make them feel good. He addresses his employers telling them how they form the workplace’s cornerstone, implying that they are important people. It impacts them as they feel good about themselves; they like the fact that someone appreciates their efforts. Moreover, harsh language has been used to reveal how it can make someone feel bad about themselves hence lowering their self-esteem. The woman, the parking lot attendant, falls in love and speaks to him in a harsh and unwelcome way every time he approaches her. It impacts him as he no longer smiles nor shares compliments to people as he used. This implies that the language affected his self-esteem; hence he could no longer be himself to the extend he loses his job.
Our self-esteem is influenced daily with the feedback we get from people about ourselves. If one is surrounded by positive-minded people who tend to offer compliments unconditionally, they are likely to develop higher self-esteem, hence achieving great results. However, people’s feelings are short-lived; hence they should be made more often to ensure their self-esteem stays. In line with that, a lousy comment about someone who comes after a good compliment will still impact how they view themselves. It could likely lower their self-esteem immediately, which takes a great deal to be back to normal. Evidently, words have a significant impact on people’s feelings; also, how they are conveyed is essential to ensure people feel good about themselves. It is only through achieving high self-esteem that the nation, as a whole, can experiences growth.
