In the nursing and healthcare setting, there has been the challenge of healthcare-acquired infections that continue to derail nursing staff and patients’ health. Healthcare acquired infections refer to the infections that patients or healthcare staff may contract while receiving or providing treatment in clinical or surgical conditions. HAI’s are a deterrent to a quick recovery, contributing to increased costs for patients and healthcare facilities. Particularly at such a time of the COVID-19 pandemic, HAIs have gained attention due to the disease’s high infection rate and increased emphasis on wearing PPEs and observing safety. To minimize HAIs, there should be a strict following the PPE requirements, and following practices such as handwashing may contribute to a reduction in infection rates of HAIs.

I chose this clinical problem because it has been a preexisting nursing clinical problem that has garnered attention during the coronavirus pandemic this year. There have been increased cases of healthcare-acquired infections reported that have contributed to the challenge of controlling the virus. Therefore, to tackle this problem, increased training and emphasis on the adherence to its use and hand hygiene are seen as effective evidence-based strategies to apply.

Where did you search for articles? How did you decide what articles to include?

There is a lot of literature that has been published on the issue of healthcare-acquired infections. The articles are based on assessing the etiology of the problem and proposing strategies to combat the rates of HAIs in healthcare facilities. I selected these articles from the medical journals in google scholar.
