Jack Noonan Recounting the Series of Events after Patrick’s Murder
Two police officers, O’Malley and I, Jack Noonan, former colleagues and friends of Patrick, entered the room. Mary recounted to us, the two police officers, as she cries that she went out to the grocer and found Patrick dead on coming back. Within some time, more police officers, a doctor, a photographer, and a fingerprint expert joined us in the house. We continued to ask Mary questions while treating her with kindness. As the police officers asked Mary questions, she recounted her story while mentioning details such as Patrick’s tiredness, her sewing, the meat existing in the oven, and about the grocer, she had visited earlier. On saying the grocer, one of the detectives walked out and confirmed her story with Sam.
The photographer and the doctor left the house. After a while, two police officers walked in and carried Patrick’s body in stretchers. After the corpse was taken away, the fingerprint expert left the house. One police officer, two detectives, and I remained at home to continue with the investigations and tracing of the murder weapon. I sympathized with Mary’s situation and offered her suggestions for seeking a company at her sister’s place or going to my wife. However, Mary turned down my suggestions and requested to stay until she could feel better and get to move. Yet, we allowed her to stay.
As I carried on with the investigations, I occasionally spoke to Mary. In my conversations with Mary, I could explain how the suspects murdered Patrick. I speculated that the murder weapon would probably be a substantial piece of metal, referring to the doctor’s observations. As a result, I viewed this to be a simple case to solve, “Get the weapon, and you’ve gotten the man.” Later, one of the detectives inquired about possible weapons present in the house. Mary replied to the detective by suggesting that the detective should search in the garage.
After almost three hours of search, the three remaining officers and I had had no success in finding the weapon. It began to get late, and we felt tired, hungry, and frustrated. Mary asked me for a drink, which I complied with by pouring her a glass of whiskey. Mary further insisted that I, too, have a glass of whiskey, which I also obliged to after some hesitation due to the set rules. Within some time, the rest of my colleagues got persuaded to have a drink, which despite them being uncomfortable with it, agree and console Mary while they enjoyed their drinks.
I vividly remember noticing that the limb was still in the oven, which I offered to turn it down for her. Then, Mary asked us of a small favor, which involved us eating the limb as a reward of being Patrick’s friends and for helping her to catch the killer. We hesitated, for the second time while at the house, but still went to the kitchen and ate the lamb. Mary remained in the room, in the seat, listening to us, as we ate the lamb and talked about the murder weapon. One of my colleagues lamented,
“Personally, I think it’s right here on the premises.”
“Probably right under our very noses. What you think, Jack?”
On hearing this statement, in the other room, Mary giggled.
