Introduction
This article is aimed at comparing between hip-hop and jazz music. Both of these collections of music came to publicity due to the amusing culture as well as inherent love and thirst for music for the black people. This has made this type of music to be famous around the world. Both kinds of music are thoroughly connected (Duffet, 2020). In addition to that, several similarities and differences are stimulating some personalities to articulate that hip-hop is “the gear of young people in the society.” To the extent that there are who grasp that the two are alike and may utilize the term interchangeably. Nevertheless, the two types of music have significant differences.
Similarities
Both sets of music are structured by African Americans. Their love and passion for this music brought about its existence. Their cultures and their origins made them appreciate this kind of music. This has made this music to be recognized globally while exposing their rich culture all over the world.
Furthermore, the two music types have remained tenderly embraced. It is important to note that these two genres are embraced by other different races around the world (Duggan, 2020). This has been amplified by scientific advances, which has eased environmental remoteness to be countered concerning circulation and accessibility of this kind of music.
Presently, these genres are listened to in Africa, Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America all listen to jazz and hip-hop music. It is clear how they have embraced this music, especially how they dance and hold dance competitions for hip-hop music. The dress code, the drawings portrayed during these dance competitions has also been adopted to look like hip-hop artists (Komaniecki, 2019). A good example is Eminem, who is a white artist but have adopted hip-hop as his African American artists. Most young people have adopted the way these African Americans speak to have a sense of belonging. Other continents have also embraced this like Africa.
Most of these musicians were raised in low-income families, choosing between drugs or music. A good example is Eminem, who had a drug addict mother, which made him work to improve his life using hip-hop music. Lil Wayne is also another example who had to beat all odds from his gang neighborhood and make it big (Savulescu, 2020). BET awards have also embraced this music in a big way. The majority of these rich artists major in hip-hop and jazz music but came from lower-class society.
Differences
Despite both types of music having originated from the United States, both originated from different places. Jazz originated from New Orleans and was discovered in the 19th Century. Jazz was performed in memorials while hip-hop is performed in parties. After the world war, jazz came to publicity (Summers, 2018). Hip-hop originated in New York at a school dance in the Bronx in the 1970s. Preferably Hip-hop is based on moods and feelings of the black youths what they had to go through from police brutality and social injustice and so many other discriminations.
Even though it can be said that two-use creativeness, jazz is used differently compared to hip-hop. Jazz conspicuously assimilates a diverse set of images, especially in live performances. For good jazz, music improvising is critical. On the other hand, hip-hop is prepared from verses that are executed, and minimal improvement is made as they use beats to rhymes with their lyrics.
Musicians from jazz are well organized as they take their time to rehearse and revise their verses to rhyme with the drums and the equipment. Even though it was formerly cited that both are recognized worldwide, hip-hop has surpassed jazz regarding reputation despite it having come to publicity after jazz (Weerasinghe, 2019). This is because the youth seem to have embraced technology quicker than the older generation who embrace jazz.
In hip-hop, musicians are mostly competing to see who performs better than the other. This can be shown by how they hold rap battles in the streets, which always results in fights. Jazz, on the other hand, are very organized and portray the right image of the association.
Hip-hop is mainly reliant on technology like computers, which can be downloaded or viewed in apps like YouTube, which has steered its popularity faster than jazz. Jazz is mostly focused on performances and live bands using instruments that are embraced by its fans. The artists in jazz use these instruments, which has been the traditional norm in jazz, while hip-hop relies mostly on the artists who rap with only the beats.
Conclusion
After the assessment of both music genres, there are certain features that they both shares. In both cases, they were incorporated; they have the same origins but different places, and. They have been recognized worldwide (Duffet, 2020). On the other hand, they have differences that cannot be confused. Hip-hop is comprised of rap rhymes, and the audience comprises of young people. It is also shared mostly using technology, which has impacted its fast popularity compared to jazz, which concentrates on live performances using specific equipment, such as saxophones.
