Journal 4: Role Model
Question 4
My role model is my mother. It’s because I have never witnessed anyone with the strength, vigour, and resilience that she has. My mother brought me up singlehandedly when she could have just opted to abort me. At a very young age, 17 years old, my mother found out that she was pregnant with me. She had just completed high school and didn’t have a job. Moreover, this was during a period when being pregnant while unmarried was considered a shameful act in society.
Despite all the challenges, she raised and brought me up even when everything seemed as though it was stacked against us. Looking back, even during the toughest times, she always had a reassuring smile on her face. She always taught me to be happy, and still believe in the good in every situation. Moreover, she had big dreams for me. She pushed me to work hard and follow my dreams, teaching me that I could be whatever I wanted to in life as long as I believed and worked hard for it.
It’s my mother’s sheer determination, and belief in me, that made me who I am today. It is through her that I learned that hard times were not meant to break us, but to shape us into who we were meant to be, and this is the reason why she is my most excellent role model.
