Limited focus

In today’s labor market, multitasking has become the norm. Many companies and organization require their employee to juggle many different tasks at any given time, but multitasking reduces performance and productivity. According to the University of Michigan, shows the human brain can only perform one single task at a time; this means when you think you are multitasking, you are just switching between tasks (Ricard n.d.). The ultimate need for this paper is to discuss the cons of multitasking. Multitasking has led to limited focus, less productivity, and compromised quality of work.

Limited focus

Juggling between two tasks that require a lot of concentration imposes a considerable effort on a human brain. Human brains need time and energy to stop what we are doing and start focusing on a new task(“Multitasking for Scientific Researchers: Pros and Cons,” 2015). If one uses a lot of energy to switch from one task to another too often, he is going to get tired, which reduces effectiveness and efficiency. Multitasking compromise focusing on one activity, thus leading to inefficiency.

Less Productivity

Dividing attention leads to a significant reduction in productivity and quality of completed work. Every time one shift from one task to another, time is lost as your brains shift gears, and all of this lost time count. For one to be productive needs to focus on one task until it is complete. The production process needs close attention, and multitasking compromises it leading to lower productivity.

Compromised quality of work

Multitasking misleads and compromises the quality of work. If some attention is dedicated to switching from one activity to another, mistakes and omissions arise (“Multitasking for Scientific Researchers: Pros and Cons” 2015b). for example, when undertaking critical assignments such as driving one may cause an accident,

In conclusion, doing many things at once has its advantages that come with severe drawbacks. Multitasking simultaneous tasks is reflective of diminished focus. The impact is employees producing poor work quality and becoming less productive compared to one that was assigned a single task at a time. Thus it is better to do one activity at a time to save time and switching cost
