Longing for freedom
Suddenly, a girl opened the door with a bang and shouted,
“Stop whatever you’re playing. It’s killing my ears!”
“Aah? Wait, who are you?” Riyu questioned.
“What was that just now? It was horrible. I could hear the piano’s scream all the way from the ground floor”, she continued her shouting.
“Don’t you ignore my question! First, tell me who you are?” Riyu asked her again.
“Let me see the score sheet.”, she ignored his question again and went to the piano to check the score sheet. She was surprised when she found out it was actually the Chopin – Etude.
“What? The Chopin – Etude? Oh God!”, she mumbled as she stared at Riyu.
“Here, hold the score sheet.” , she gave him the score sheet and sat in the chair. Riyu shockingly said,
“No, don’t tell me that you’re gonna play!”. Before Riyu could
finish saying his sentence, she s
tarted to play the piano
. He
r first note was clear. In fact, it was too clear.
The
first drop of rain, falling into the river. Riyu
felt the same way when he heard her first note. She immersed herself in her own music. She was no longer herself. Riyu couldn’t understand what was happen
ing.
He realised it was no longer the Chopin – Etude
. She
made it her
own. Though
she is
following the scoresheet, the emotion that was exerted
from her music was no longer the melodious Chopin – Etude. Riyu felt anger, loneliness, struggle and desire for freedom. He remembered what his teacher said, ‘music reveals one’s soul’. All he could see was a different version of her. She was no longer the wild girl. Instead, a girl longing for
freedom from something.
Just like that, she
finished the
Chopin – Etude.
