Magic is defined as the ability to influence the natural order of events with the use of supernatural powers. Two of the most famous magicians in the world are David Blaine and Jason Lewis. David Blaine was born in 1973 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City (The Famous People, 2020). He works as an illusionist, magician, and endurance artist. Jason Lewis is a 49-year-old actor and model born in Newport Beach, the state of California (Yahoo! Movies, 2019). The paper reviews the similarities and differences between Blaine and Lewis with a focus on their early life, achievements, failures and the motivation they have to pursue their careers.

David Blaine attended the Passaic Valley Regional High School in the state of new jersey where he and his family had moved. Blaine moved to Manhattan in New York City when he was at the age of 17 (The Famous People, 2020). As a magician, Blaine is most known for his record-breaking endurance stunts at different points of his life. An example is when he was buried in a plastic coffin for seven days, deprived of food and being given a couple of teaspoonfuls of water a day (BBC, 1999). Masses gathered at the coffin reopening scene and were amazed at his level of endurance. As a magician, the tomb stunt outdid Blaine’s hero Harry Houdini, who had planned extensive endurance stunts before he died in 1926 (BBC, 1999). Breaking his and others’ records was one of Blaine’s motivational factors in magic. One of Blaine’s major failures targeting his personal life was having been accused of the alleged sexual assault of Natasha Prince, a model at her home in west London, the United Kingdom, in 2017 (Deb, 2019). Even though the media in the UK announced a year later that he would not be facing charges for the same, the assault charges had already affected his publicity negatively. The main similarity between Blaine and Lewis is in their outstanding debut performances. Blaine was involved in the magic stunts. Lewis was excellent in modeling as well. Compared to Lewis, who was involved in other careers beyond magic, Blaine was wholly immersed into magic and endurance stunts at a young age within New York. Therefore, there exists similarities and differences between the magicians.

Lewis attended Los Alamitos High School in Los Alamitos, California, where he lived with his parents. He is an alma mater of the san Diego university (Yahoo! Movies, 2019). After college, Lewis began his modeling career in Paris and then set out to Milan, where he modeled for Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger and other renowned fashion giants (Hancock, 2003). Lewis made his acting debut in 1995 (Yahoo! Movies, 2019). Lewis’s achievements have mostly been based one of Lewis’s most outspoken films, Half Magic. The film is based on the fantasy fiction narrative of three women who choose to explore wild adventures to solve sexist and romantic issues that they had been facing (Scheck, 2018). His role on Half Magic got Lewis involved in a virtual world of magic. A significant difference between Lewis and Blaine is that the former has not been involved in lawsuits and charges for his behavior in personal life. Also, Lewis’s involvement is virtual, while Blaine’s is real. Therefore, Blaine’s involvement in magic is more visible than that of Lewis.

Conclusively, a review of both Lewis and Blaine reveals the similarities and differences between the magicians. Their main similarity lies in their ability to debut into their careers with excellence and therefore attracting many people. The main difference between the two is that Blaine is more involved in real or visible magic while Lewis’s is more of virtual or imagined. Between the two, I like Blaine the most. That is because Blaine appears more daring in his career than Lewis and thus is more popular. His motivation is also often fueled by his desire to defeat his past achievements. Lastly, Blaine is more pragmatic in his approach to magic than Lewis is. Therefore, Blaine paints the picture of magic clearer than Lewis does.
