Map Projections

Question one:

Which projection dates back over 2,000 years to the Egyptians and Greeks?

Azimuthal equidistant projection is the projection that was used by ancient Egyptians and Greeks back 2000years ago. This projection shows all meridians as straight ensuring that all distances which are from the pole are well represented. In terrestrial points, Azimuthal projection can be used for pointing communication. It can still be used to show missiles ranges. Greeks back in 2000 years ago used to use Stereographic Equal-Angle which is an azimuthal projection that was used to map polar regions.

Which projection shows true direction?

Lambert Conformal Conic projection is one of the projections that show true direction. It was developed by Johann Lambert and is a projection that preserves shape. This projection portrays shape more perfectly than area therefore its common in most maps for North America.

Which projection would be your best choice to use for navigation in a conical layout?

Lambert Conformal conic projection is the best choice for navigation in a conical layout. This is because it is a conic map projection. This projection seats a cone over the Earth sphere and the surface is projected onto the cone. Pilots base their aeronautical charts on LCC because when a straight line is drawn on LCC projection it will approximate a route of a great circle between endpoints for distances on typical flights.

Pick an ocean and discuss which projection you would use to map it and why.

Arctic Ocean whereby I will use Alaska Polar Stereographic projection. This projection is a mapping that projects a sphere onto a plane and is conformal therefore it ensures that angles are preserved where curves meet. This projection is mostly carried using a computer or graph paper which is of a special kind therefore it’s more accurate. It is the only projection that all circles on a sphere are mapped into circles on a plane.

Question two:

Imagine that a transportation device (perhaps like Harry Potter’s floo powder) would enable all humans to travel instantaneously to any location on Earth. What might be the impact on the distribution of people and activities across Earth?

In case such a kind of transportation device existed, all aspects of our society would have been affected. Businesses could be conducted without depending on technology therefore the importance of technology would decrease. For people to travel would never need to rely on airplanes, trains, and cars to travel. The invention of this transportation device would still affect the environment whereby global warming would decrease and there would be a bit some clean air by decreasing CFCs. This transportation device would still cause cities to be overcrowded because everybody would have access to the city. In conclusion, this device would still help to trade between two different countries to be easy since it won’t take long to transport goods.
