“Big Fish” is a terminology commonly used in economics to mean the market leaders. The current pattern of Oman’s can be classified as the “big fish” for several reasons. In any market, the “big fish” does not affect the operations of the other “big fishes” but affects the small fishes. In this case, small fishes are small and medium scale enterprises. In the primary markets, Omantel will attack the small fishes and come up with the techniques which make them have more competitive advantages than the other “big fishes.” For instance in Oman, the telecommunication sector is classified as fully developed and established. The market leader in this industry is Omantel. Omantel is part of the Oman telecommunication company whereby the government owns 70% of its shares. The second company in the telecommunication industry is Ooredoo. The two companies are considered the “big fishes” in the telecommunication industry and are said to have more than four million loyal customers in Oman. In this case, Omantel owns networks, towers, and infrastructure does not get concerned with Ooredoo since they are independent. In addition to that, there are other small companies in the same industry including; Renna and Friendi and are classified as the small fishes. In most cases, Omantel has used small fishes to attract customers from Ooredoo. By using this strategy, Ooredoo does not cause the risk of Omantel but ensures that most of his customers are not affected by the small fishes-Renna and Friends. In addition to that, there is another company called Awasr although it only deals with internet services. In some perspective, it is considered as Omantel’s competitor on the grounds f the internet services. Since Awasr Company is more specialized in internet services than Omantel, it is difficult to attack it directly. This gives Awasr a chance to expand its operations in the different markets in Oman. In this case, they may choose to diversify their operations and start dealing with the other telecommunication services. Currently, there was an announcement that the Vodafone group will enhance its operations in the telecommunication sector and hence change the market settings in Sultanate. Since it is a global company, it might be a bigger fish when compared to the other companies.
From my point of view, the new companies entering the telecommunication industry will bring healthy competition. In this case, quality services will be likely to be offered and also increased the chances of new inventions. This will also help the country enjoy more advanced services such as IoT, smart cities, and cybersecurity among other dimensions. This will make the country get updated with the changing technology and help the local companies compete internationally and hence improving the economy.
