I experience a number of emotions, both positive and negative, like sadism and fear. They vary with my thoughts, individual behaviors, the way I perceive others and the world. For instance, I’m not too fond of the noisy place, so I tend to be irritated and upset every time I get to a noisy place. And it was hard coping with the negative emotions until I understood the link between emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. I have learned to clear negative emotions and reactions and behaviors through mindfulness. Becoming aware of one’s thoughts helps significantly control how they will react (Desautels, 2016). For example, while driving and you notice a cow is crossing the road slowly. Mostly, one will get angry and think of getting out of the car to yell at the cow’s owner, which is a negative reaction. But through mindfulness, they will be able to choose the right response like wait for the cows to pass as they breathe in and out, focusing on what is around them. They will be able to remain calm and avoid unnecessary reactions like yelling at the cow’s owner. My greatest obstacle was patience and minding what people think (Tolin, 2016). I learned that I am very impatient, and it makes me do things that I later regret, like irritated and yelling at people for doing things slowly. I also learned that I mind what people think about me and get so lost in it. For instance, if I turn down a friend, I stress over they will think of me and what other people will think of me after knowing I turned the friend down. Therefore, I have decided to train myself to be mindful, patient, and accept what I can control and what I cannot control. Something positive I could take away from experience was basically about mindfulness and accepting things I can’t control and controlling those I can wisely.
