Michael Moore’s Sicko Film

The film, in this case, is known as Sicko, and it was produced by Michael Moore back in 2007 to show the drawbacks of the American healthcare system. Some of the issues that are brought out include: how the government and insurance benefit, how the lack of healthcare insurance affects the middle and lower-class individuals, and lack of empathy in the system as compared to socialist systems put in place in the U.K, Canada, and Cuba.

When looking at most of the documentaries by Michael Moore, they have a lot humour to lighten the mood since they are on serious subjects. Different types of humour, such as irony and deadpan, are applied in the film sicko. An example is when Moore was talking to the doctor, telling him that he wanted to see how doctors had to live under state control. Self-deprecating humour and satire are also applied, especially when pocking the government.

Additionally, there are a number of sources used in this film to stress Moore’s ideas. There is much to learn from “normal” people. They are not experts, but they have had experience with the healthcare systems and plea to emotions. Experts such as lawyers, doctors, and insurance people serve as a petition to the authorities. Old clips from the American congress and presidential discussion were used as expert sources.

When it comes to screen time, there is no equality since the experts were given more time on screen as compared to the “normal” individuals. Though, a significant number of normal people was interviewed compared to the experts because pathos, logos, and ethos were considered. Despite the fact that there was no equality during the interview between the normal people and the experts, the information was persuasive.

Just like in any other films, Sicko had bias since Moore did not show those Americans that were comfortable and appreciated their insurance coverage or other nationalities that were not contented with the care they received. Generally, I support the film despite having this bias because a person living in Canada is likely not to go to the hospital because of the fear that the cost might be unaffordable. I want to end up in a nation where there is an easy way of accessing care at any time.
