Miscommunication
Describe a situation in which you had a miscommunication with someone else
In the workplace, miscommunication is a serious problem that can cost the business and the results can be devastating to all parties involved. I worked as a designer in the fashion industry where I experienced difficulties when doing my task in the organization since I could misinterpret information given by the manager and it was hard to hit designing targets (Aimee et al., 2017). I was unsure of the job assigned, which led to a waste of time by the end of the day.
Cause of miscommunication
The main reason for the miscommunication was that manager could explain the task in language that I could not understand. Therefore I could not complete the job in time due to unclear guidelines and this led to conflict with my manager. Also, the manager lacked the leadership abilities and this significantly contributed to miscommunication. Often, the manager could hesitate when giving me instruction and could not answer my question related to designing clothes. The manager provided inadequate training where some information was missing and this led to the transferring of incorrect details to the task assigned (Aimee et al., 2017). Still, the manager could send an accusatory message and demanding tone in my email, which led to poor communication
What was the result?
Miscommunication led people to the loss of morale in the organization. Poor communication with my manager made me stressed and frustrated and this eventually caused me to lose morale in designing. The conflict-affected my performance and this affected the productivity of the company since I could not manage to design many pieces of clothes. Also, a miscommunication led to failure to complete the work on time and the industry suffered a loss of sales. Lack of clear communication leads employees to do the wrong task and this disappoints their superiors (Blidaru et al., 2015). Miscommunication leads to dissatisfaction with customers; when the fashion industry misses the deadline, the customer gets frustrated and they buy the product from other companies.
Knowing what you know having completed this course, how could you have better communicated in this situation?
Improving communication is an essential step toward creating a cohesive workplace. I would take time to listen to instructions keenly. I would ask a question for clarification and give the conversation of the manager full attention. I would also use a modern tool such as email and phone calls to reach the manager and clarify some instructions. Online communication helps maintain track of the progress and the manager can know what is left to complete. Also, I would strengthen my connection with the manager (Dyer & Sue, 2017). Managers should take the time to listen to the employee and create a direct report on each task assigned. Through this manager would be able to address my concern and I would feel connected.
Maintaining regular contact with managers would improve communication in the company. Managers should open door policy and allow workers to ask questions and raise concerns at any time. Also, the manager should respond to my message in email box or text messages and they should set time to answer calls and email messages (Dyer & Sue, 2017). The company should hire managers with high qualification of leadership skills. Managers should have the ability to communicate positively with employees and make everyone feel appreciated and valued and this contributes to effective communication.
How could a new method of communication have changed the result?
Improved communication within an organization boosts the workers’ morale. In this regard, I will feel that I am well informed about company direction and more secure with my responsibility. Regular communication improves work ethic when the workers are reminded of their achievement and common objectives (Petrulaitiene et al ., 2015). Excellent communication builds a better relationship and helps the employee to motivate by the company.
Good communication increase company productivity and help people to avoid unnecessary delays in completing the task. Regular communication enables the company to remain transparent and this help in building trust to company product and service (Petrulaitiene et al ., 2015). Proper communication channels help the company to meet customer requirements and needs.
