The topic discussed in Modern Language Association’s website is of interest to me as I am a humanity student and the issues addressed in the article are issues affecting both graduate and undergraduate humanity students which include: the downsizing of humanity subjects in institutions of higher learning and the lack of jobs for humanity graduate students. These issues relate to my field of study and are of interest to me as they are some of the potential problems I could face as a humanities graduate student.
Practitioners and scholars in my discipline engage with the article’s discussion of issues encountered in humanities, helping them make improvements on their teaching and research methods to reduce problems encountered in the area. By doing so, they will achieve the central goal of humanities, which is to help students develop skills in critical thinking, research, reading, and writing, thus assisting us students become efficient oral and written communicators.
This article also imposes certain genre conventions in its writing, such as theme, setting, mood, and structure. The central theme of the article is the theme of curbing humanities-related issues. The whole article centers its whole argument on this theme. The article’s setting relates to any institution of higher learning that provides humanity courses for its students. The mood showcased in the report is sad due to the issues encountered and also determined in dealing with those issues. The article structure is of two sub-paragraphs whereby the first paragraph is titled ‘ What kind of future’ and the second is titled ‘The Tasks Moving Forward.’ The first paragraph presents the issues encountered, while the second paragraph outlines possible alternatives in managing the first paragraph’s problems.
The article also possesses all principles of a rhetoric situation: text, author, audience, purpose, and setting. Therefore regarding the rhetoric situation of the genre, the article is in written form. The author of the article is Judith. The audience of the article is both humanity students and humanity instructors. This article aims to create awareness of issues experienced by humanity students and deduce solutions for those issues.
The setting of the article, according to time, was published in 2020 shortly after the pandemic started showcased when the author states that the issues addressed were still existent before the covid-19 epidemic but have only become much worse after the pandemic, therefore, revealing the time that the article was published. The setting and environment of the article relate to any institution of higher learning.
