Modern Literature
Part I: Symbols in the readings
A pearl in The Pearl initially represented providence for the people. The people of Kino initially had a specific prophecy about the greatness of a ‘pearl’ (Kean 2019). It was to be a perfect pearl which would similarly appear through near to excellent possibilities. The discovery of Kino and Juana on the pearl appeared to fulfil the prophecy to a more significant extent. It filled them with more hope concerning the Coyotito. The pearl for them stood out as a unique identity for the people.
In The Log from the Sea of Cortez, the water depths are used to represent the show of our mind’s capabilities. It was merely to remind the people that we are all different, just as the depths in the sea (Steinbeck & Ricketts 2000). We cannot all be in the same frame in the world as we all have different likings and specialities despite being humans.
In Once There Was A War, the concept of straight news was adopted as a report to what was happening at the time concerning failure to report the story on the happenings within the borders (Steinbeck & 3M Company 2007). The ‘straight news’ would be used to show the expectations of the media and the higher standard set on the personalities within the media to show patriotism in their job.
Part II: Impressions on the modern man
The ‘Modern Man’ appeared as a multidiscipline individual such that they worked on different aspects at a time. At the time, one did not just focus on being an artist alone, even as they stretched their capabilities into the field. Some took part in the war as soldiers besides being painters and later did their works out of the direct experience they had. The ‘Modern man’ therefore showed that he was capable of handling more duties regardless of the challenges that came up at a time. They were capable of framing things to go on their end because they were always a more significant part of the war taking place. For most of them, they wanted to be part of the war hence had a better regard for the war than most other people in the society. They developed extreme affection towards the struggle and pushed forward with a direct contribution rather than an artistic sideshow.
‘The modern man’ was concerned about change and progress as per T.S Eliot’s Assertions. The group was moved more into accepting challenges and wanting to participate in economic and social development. Most of them did not want a conservative role in such matters and tended to prefer taking the most active role in the war. On the other hand, Hemingway’s noted that their sights were not just in war alone but also in social growth at the time which required that the people should take a direct, and active role in leadership.
Part III: http://www.pdimages.com/
The site covers a cover of the first United Kingdom book of James Joyce. It gives a straight portrait of a young man. The site grants access to modern viewers about the stories of the past and provide them with a chance to reflect into history. The source can be useful for preliminary research because it does not offer most of the images on the ‘Modern Man’ but takes the stage in explaining modern literature and photography. As a result, it could be best used for the preliminary research because it does not have deep digging into the research process as required.
