My career journey

After finishing my high school Education in the year 2006, it had taken me a close to a decade before joining Mount Kenya University for my bachelor’s degree in security studies and criminology. Despite passing the high school education, and attaining a grade of B, which qualified me to join the university for a degree program, I could not join the University because my parents were not able to raise the university fee.

With the little they had, my parents decided to enroll me to a community teacher training college (Machakos teachers training college), at the college, I experienced a different world opening up to me. I learned a lot about life as well as the potential that I possessed. Being exposed to a new environment, I excelled academically and learned that if I tried hard, I could succeed in anything that I placed effort on it. Upon graduation at Machakos teachers college in April 2010, I qualified to attain the Teacher Service Commission Number that allowed me to teach in Kenyan primary schools. Therefore I have taught in Star of David Christian Academy at Mombasa (Coastal part of Kenya), which was offering an American system, Accelerate Christian Education(ACE). I taught in the institution for 3-4 years.

In September 2013, I was recruited to the National police service, where I underwent a 15-month para-military police training. I was posted in Mandera County (Northeastern part of Kenya) after Pass Out parade in April 2014 at National police College Embakasi A Campus, Nairobi. I was appointed to be the Chief Armorer at Mandera Administration Police County Headquarter, and this was three months after being posted in the region.

On Wednesday 15 October 2014 I gave my colleagues rifles as they were escorting Mandera County Governor Ali Roba to visit Elwak sub-county (Northeastern part of Kenya bordering Somalia). After three hours upon their departure, we received a distress call from the emergency signal room that security details that were escorting the Ali Roba, who is still the Governor now, has been hit. We were deployed immediately by our quick respond commander to respond to the scene. On arrival, we engaged the militant on live fire for almost 30 minutes. On the process, two of our officers were killed, and four were seriously injured. They were air lifted to Nairobi hospital for treatment. We managed to subdue the Terrorist as they withdrew and escaped beyond the neighboring border of Somalia. The governor was unhurt.

On November 2014, I was among the police officers who responded to the Mandera bus attack, which killed four of my colleagues and 24 members of the public who were civilian teachers traveling to Nairobi. The northern, eastern frontier has unstable security wise due to the Kenya Somalia border. This Insecurity in Kenya has hindered our economic development since even foreign investors do not have confidence with our security agents.as am writing my statement of purpose two Cuban doctors have been kidnaped by al-Shabaab, and the government is negotiating for their release. These are some of the insecurities that Kenya face coupled with incompetence in police training which, according to my view, has certain loopholes. Kenya security system needs an international outlook concerning our insecurity. Inorder to address terrorism, which is an international crime, Kenya needs specialists in criminology and security to be able to handle and advice the government on the security issue.

Due to my teacher training background, in January 2015 I was recalled from Mandera (norther Eastern part of Kenya) by the commandant at administration police leadership and sports center(APLSC-Nairobi) to train as an instructor. In APLSC we taught experiential learning to the police officer, wilderness survival, Leadership, and management.one of the course that really prepares police officer is the cadet course that ensures that all officers climb Mount Kenya to the peak of Lenana.this ensure strong mental, perseverance, teamwork and problem-solving. I taught at APLSC as an instructor for two years’ and was later posted to National Police College Embakasi A Campus were I have instructed up to date, I have instructed more than 4000 police recruits and promotional course, and now they are serving in different parts of Kenya. Being an instructor has taught me to work in a demanding situation, working with different people from different background, which are some of the skills needed at graduate studies. Being actively involved in training police officers at National Police Training College Embakasi A Campus it will be to the betterment of National Police service if I get admitted to your university and graduate with a masters in criminology and criminal justice, I will be able to deliver by training the national police recruits, promotional course to the best criminological practices in order to curb crime and terrorism.

One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was attaining The college Degree, even though my early adulthood pointed in the opposite direction. At the national police college Embakasi a campus I joined mount Kenya university to pursue a bachelor of arts in criminology and security studies.

My focus an undergraduate was with an eye toward graduate school and a career as a professional criminologist, I have not only completed an undergraduate but completed a Kenya sign language course at KENYA INSTITUTE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION. Also, I have become actively involved in Nairobi city monthly cleaning. At the college every first Friday of every month, I actively participate in cleaning the Nairobi city slums, this is also to support the pioneer project of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko. During this cleanings we sensitize the youth and community on community policing programs. I also enjoy sharing my experiences in police work to the youth as well as mentoring the youth from slums ensuring that they do not engage in crime, as well as helping them achieve their own academic success or life goals. I train the administration police rugby team due to my passion in sports; I feel that my life experiences as well as my commitment to education and police work would be an asset to graduate program criminology and criminal justice. University of Missouri- Kansas city has an exciting interdisciplinary program that is exceptionally impressive. This will provide the strong background I desire in order to shape my future career in criminology. I feel that University of Missouri- Kansas city is a premier institution for an aspiring master’s degree candidate and as such, a very competitive program. But I know I have the tools and the determination to excel in such a stimulating and challenging environment.I hope this presents to you a well-rounded student, equipped with the skills necessary to succeed at University of Missouri- Kansas city. I look forward to being introduced to new academic and social challenges as well as experiencing American culture
