I am a thirty-two-year-old mother of three beautiful children – two boys and a girl. My children are fourteen, three, and one year old. Over the last years, my children have been the answer to the question regarding my most significant accomplishments. However, although I love them immensely, I still have more to accomplish in life. This fact has led me to further question my purpose in life, besides being a mother. Recently, I decided to go back to school to realize more of my purpose in life.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a pediatric nurse since nursing has always been my passion. I am passionate about helping others, especially children. This passion is also compounded by the fact that I am a mother. Therefore, I called my family and informed them of my plan to join the nursing school. I believe that nursing is a challenging course. Completing the course and realizing the most out of it would require a lot of support from my family.
While studying nursing is a lifelong dream, doing it in an established school is even better. This is why I have decided to join Macomb Community College for the nursing program. The college would help me to lay a foundation toward a bachelor’s degree in the same field. A degree in nursing would put me at a pedestal in the field. Possibly, I would also pursue a master’s degree in nursing upon completing my undergraduate studies. These are my short term goals that would lay a foundation for my long-term objectives in life. Since I am going back to school at a somewhat advanced age, I feel more focused and driven toward success. I believe that my children are my most significant driving force as their future depends on what I invest in the present. To stay on track toward my goal, I have also created a vision board that would always remind me of my focus whenever I feel overwhelmed in my academic journey. I believe that this vision helps me look up to the women who have come ahead of me. Likewise, I would like my children to be proud of my accomplishments in the future. Going back to school and chasing my dreams is one way to set an example for them.
This semester is the beginning of this journey. Therefore, I want to learn the importance of studying nursing and get acquainted with requisites toward becoming successful in this course in the long run. I intend to acquire new studying habits and sharpen my note-taking skills. These habits and skills would help me both within the class as a student and in practice as a nurse. However, I would ensure that acquiring these habits does not derail me from balancing my life. Besides, they should not impact my relationship with my family since they are my most significant source of support through this program.
Since my children are my most significant inspiration to become a better person, they remain my greatest accomplishment. My journey and will to return to school for my passion in my thirties would be a story of encouragement for them. It gives me pleasure to work toward something about which I am passionate. I look forward to more accomplishments in this new journey, and I believe that my story will be similar to Darneisha Smith’s, who is a pediatric nurse and a mother of three, just like me.
